If you answered yes, our Pinawa, Manitoba location is looking to fill the role of Electrical Design Technician. The successful candidate will be a member of a multi-disciplinary branch providing integrated project management, engineering, design and construction services for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities, and research and development experiments at the Whiteshell (WL) site. Under general direction from the Branch Manager, the employee will contribute to the development of conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs of electrical power systems. What will you be doing?

  • Being assigned as a design job leader including job management and execution oversight.
  • Providing assistance in resolving identified issues to prevent or mitigate loss of schedule and budget.
  • Providing job updates and status reports to management.
  • Guiding the work of several technologists, coordinating schedules and assigning tasks to reach an overall objective within cost, quality and time requirements.
  • Providing mentorship and technical oversight to junior technologists.
  • Preparing engineering drawings and related documents for electrical design.
  • Making revisions to existing CADD and hand drawings.
  • Making revisions to Master Equipment Lists (MELs) to identify equipment removed from service.
  • Engineering support during decommissioning activities.
  • Checking the work of junior staff and providing guidance.
  • Conducting walk downs to support, troubleshoot, and make minor revisions to electrical systems.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education and has more than twelve (12) years' of relevant technological experience.
    • Secondary School graduation diploma or its equivalent and has more than 12 years' of relevant experience, or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Solving and/or providing recommendations for technical issues.
    • Interpreting marked up drawings.
    • Must possess a strong knowledge of design drafting technique and practice.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Produce neat, legible, and accurate drawings in a reasonable time.
    • Use proficiency in both written and oral communication.
    • Be fluent in English and able to follow and implement complex procedures.
    • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and interact with staff at various levels of the organization.
    • Work with minimal supervision.
    • Solve and/or providing recommendations for technical issues.
    • Interpret marked up drawings.
    • Effectively communicate with internal customers and is required. The employee is expected to interact daily with other engineers and designers to complete design deliverables. He/she must also effectively communicate work progress to his/her project execution teams on a regular basis.
    • Effectively communicate with external customers and suppliers.
    • Identify and request additional resources required to complete assigned work on schedule.
    • Effectively manage multiple tasks/assignments.
    • Solve and/or provide recommendations for technical issues.
    • Supervise other drafting personnel assigned to the project team as required such as by providing advice and consultation to others in their own technical specialty and checking their own work. The employee may also be expected to demonstrate leadership on specific assignments.
    • Possess a positive attitude and a strong ability to work effectively within a team.
    • Work independently in an environment of rapidly changing and conflicting priorities using prioritization and planning skills to meet established deadlines.
    • Have a personal commitment to safety and a questioning attitude.
    • Be self-motivated individual showing attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive desk and computer work.
  • Occasional visits to any facility on the WL site, including radiological zones.
  • There is potential to enter highly hazardous environments and the requirements to wear personal protective equipment to mitigate any physical/health hazards.
  • Visual concentration is required for preparing and/or checking design drawings and related documents.
  • Project deadlines or emergent work may require the employee to work beyond the normal working day when requested and/or approved by line management.
