As a Natural Trader & Scheduler, you will be responsible for monitoring supply and demand trends while ensuring availability of product and maximizing returns for the company. The Natural Gas Trader and Scheduler is responsible for executing physical trades and developing trading strategies in compliance with Irving Oil’s trade policies while analyzing market conditions to generate value. They are also responsible for scheduling duties along various pipelines throughout North America.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Execute daily spot trades in accordance with company policies

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of how natural gas is utilized within the various consuming business units, as well as issues that impact its use

  • Negotiate North American Energy Standards Board (NAESD) contract to establish relationships with new counterparties (suppliers/buyers/marketers/brokers). Engage internal Stakeholders including Treasury, Legal, Credit and Tax in verifying the terms and Special Provisions to the base contracts.

  • Negotiate contract terms/provisions for buy/sell (Price/volume/location/periods)

  • Participate in Pipeline contract (Tolls & Tariff) negotiations and assist in executing Service Agreements

  • Provide timely scheduling support to the Team Lead including development, management and execution of short-term or spot physical trading and scheduling strategies

  • Analyze market information and market trends daily to inform decisions on trading and scheduling

  • Collaborate with senior traders to develop and implement trading strategies

  • Support the Commodity Risk Management team in the development of analyses for non-standard hedging strategies in accordance with company policies

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with counter parties, traders, schedulers, pipelines and brokers.

  • Provide periodic presentations to senior management regarding strategy and financial performance

  • Support team analytics and models to identify trading and scheduling opportunities

  • Actively work on transactions, analysis and strategies during regular market hours. Actively manage positions and transactions at all times.

  • Collaborate and provide support to all internal stakeholders who are closely engaged with natural gas

  • Assure routine deliverables to all internal stakeholders are complete accurately and on-time.

  • Maintain a strong understanding or willingness to learn natural gas market relevant alternate fuels, power and LNG.

  • Maintain understanding and knowledge of rules and regulations that are applied in pipeline General Terms and Conditions as well as knowledge and managing the existing contracts (Short-term and Long-term)

Your Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Proven ability to maintain good working relationships with stakeholders including senior leaders

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience dealing with multiple priorities and deadlines / proven ability to meet hard deadlines

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Good presentation skills

  • Highly proficient with MS Office: Word, Excel, Outlook

  • An entrepreneurial and commercial mindset with strong negotiation, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

Your Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in business, economics, finance related disciplines, engineering or equivalent experience

  • 1-5 years' related experience

  • Experience in energy markets analysis is an asset

  • Prior natural gas scheduling experience and knowledge of North American natural gas markets and pipelines would be an asset.

  • Experience in scheduling other modes of transportation will be considered

  • Supply chain management experience
