The Fisheries and Marine Institute (Marine Institute)—a campus of Memorial University—is ISO 9001 certified and is one of the world's most respected centers for marine learning and applied research. The Marine Institute enjoys an outstanding reputation in Canada, across North America, and internationally, as the most comprehensive institution for education, training, research, and industrial support for ocean industries. Home to over 400 faculty members, researchers, and staff; over 1,100 students in Certificate Diploma, Bachelor, Masters, and PhD programs; and over 5,000 learners enrolled annually in community based and industrial response training courses, the Marine Institute offers more than 20 academic programs through its three Schools: Ocean Technology; Fisheries; and Maritime Studies. The schools include specialized centers that drive innovation and collaboration, lead technology transfer, and provide industry training. As part of its global reach to date, the Marine Institute has successfully implemented more than 250 projects in 50 countries.

The School of Ocean Technology (SOT) offers undergraduate certificate, diploma, degree, and graduate degree programs focused on remotely operated and underwater vehicles, ocean mapping, technology management, and leadership. The school also has a growing research presence (including a Canadian Research Chair in Ocean Mapping) with increasing numbers of research based graduate students. In addition to its academic programs, the School of Ocean Technology includes the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec). CTec collaborates with academic, government, and industry partners to advance technology for the practical benefit of the maritime community. The Centre is engaged in applied research and development across key areas, including Ocean Mapping, Ocean Observation, and Ocean Data Management and Knowledge Products; as well as Remotely Operated Vehicles, Autonomous/Uncrewed Surface Vehicles, and Autonomous/Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles. CTec resides at The Launch in Holyrood. The Launch serves as the Marine Institute's gateway to the ocean and serves as the operational base for marine activities, supporting education, training, and research.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The School of Ocean Technology is seeking a creative and passionate leader to take on the Assistant Head position and help shape the future of the school and the Marine Institute. Reporting to the Head, this senior position will contribute to, and support the vision, strategic direction, and the long-term and day-to-day leadership of a high-performance team, empowered to enrich academic programs, research, and industry partnerships for the school.

The successful applicant will play a crucial role in the enhancement and development of education, training, and research programs, as well as the overall administration of the school. The Assistant Head is key to ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of academic and research programs for the school through working with faculty, other units and administrators, accreditation and regulatory bodies, and industry partners to identify the education, training, and research needs of the ocean technology sector.

Duties of the position include identifying new opportunities for education, training, and research; developing/renewing courses and programs; preparing faculty workloads; addressing students' academic issues and concerns; spearheading opportunities through grants and proposals; managing operating and project budgets; assisting with institute and school level strategic planning; being involved with academic audits and accreditation requirements; marketing and promoting the capability and capacity of the school; representing the school at relevant industry meetings and consultation sessions; representing the school on academic committees; contributing to the quality management system; being involved with faculty recruitment and renewal; actively involved in community engagement activities related to ocean technology and ocean literacy; and performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (4+ years) in a leadership/management role in the marine sector with a graduate degree in science, engineering, or business. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. It is essential that the successful applicant have significant experience in post-secondary education. The position benefits from work experience in the marine industry complemented with a good network within the ocean technology community. A comprehensive knowledge of global ocean technology trends is beneficial. A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaborate strategically internally and externally with a wide variety of stakeholders (industry, academia, government, etc.) is a necessity. An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to engage in a wide range of projects with demonstrated organizational and planning abilities is required. The candidate will be results-oriented; and have a management style that is participative and accessible, yet decisive.
