Department of Facilities Management

(Permanent Position)

DUTIES

Reporting to the Manager of Central Utilities, the Supervisor, External Plants supervises the maintenance and operation of regulated plant equipment and operations external to the Central Utilities Plant and specialized satellite plants such as the Ocean Science Centre and Food Pilot Plant. The Supervisor of External Plants is the designated Chief Engineer for the Ocean Science Centre.

Duties include supervising, planning and directing the scheduled and on demand maintenance programs; coordinating the ongoing development of the computerized maintenance management program as it relates to buildings and equipment under Supervisor's direction and its utilization in administering the related maintenance program; coordinating the retention of externally contracted services related to these functions; developing and maintaining a system of regularly scheduled and reactive system or equipment inspections, tests and season start ups or shutdown of building system; coordinating with the Manager as it relates to operational issues identified including recommending changes in operating shift procedures and processes based on maintenance requirements; coordinating leave schedules and relief staff requirements; administering operating budgets related to assigned responsibilities; supervising and administering the collective agreement as it applies to assigned staff; acting as Maintenance Coordinator for the Ocean Sciences Centre, and Project Head for specified deferred maintenance and capital projects as assigned by the Manager; supervising plant maintenance activities in the absence of the Supervisor of Maintenance, Central Utilities; liaising with other departmental sections, other University departments, and Service NL; maintaining effective communication streams with clients and other units; participating in regular staff and Central Utilities meetings; coordinating general purchasing activities for functions under Supervisor's authority; and performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Thorough experience (5-7 years) in mechanical maintenance and operation of a power plant is required, including supervisory experience (1-3 years). The successful candidate will possess a valid 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of a wide variety of power plant and building equipment; the maintenance and operation of a high pressure multiple-boiler operation; low-pressure boiler operation; specialized research facilities and mechanical installations including specialized pumping and piping systems; computer control systems as they relate to equipment control systems and interfaces and with operating conditions in remote locations; multi-unit standby power system; computerized maintenance management systems; and occupational health and safety standards.


SALARY $75,534 - $103,001 per annum (Management and Professional)

Plus market differential of $4,160 per annum
