We are currently looking for an HVDC Operations Technologist to join our team. Reporting to the Manager, Asset Operations & Maintenance.
Key elements of this role include:
- Participate and support with the development and execution of the long term asset management plan;
- Develop and maintain maintenance and safe work method manuals and troubleshooting procedures for the HVDC converter station;
- Perform operation and maintenance activities in accordance with engineering and manufacturer guidelines; could include all installations, inspection, commissioning and maintenance of equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, capacitors, reactors, instrument transformers, HVAC equipment, IGBT valves, valve cooling and de-ionization equipment as well as the HVDC Control and Protection System;
- Troubleshooting, repair/replacement of equipment, work scheduling and planning, equipment and control and protection system maintenance, routine inspections, and coordination/supervision of contractors/utility personnel to perform maintenance activities;
- Assist in the planning of weekly work activities, and help in the preparation for shutdown maintenance and replacement works;
- Interpret schematics and drawings to facilitate troubleshooting;
- Provide functional leadership and mentoring to junior HVDC engineers, technicians/technologists & utility/mechanical staff as appropriate;
- Coordinate and supervise various contractors for routine maintenance tasks associated with specialty sub systems as required;
- Ensure safe isolation and de-energization of high voltage and mechanical equipment, in accordance with approved procedures;
- Supervision of contractors and approval of invoices as required;
- Support ENL’s transmission line inspection and vegetation management programs as required;
- Other duties as required.

As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies:
- Minimum three to five (3-5) years of working experience in electrical and instrument & controls programming, maintenance, operation and planning within an electric utility, process or equivalent industry;
- Certificate in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology. Registration as a C.E.T. will be considered an asset. A related combination of experience and education may also be considered;
- Strong technical skills in high voltage electrical systems, grounding, control and protection, system operations, and proven problem resolution skills with flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments is a requirement;
- Proficiency with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment and software use and programming in an industrial setting;
- Must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands;
- Must have the ability to assist in shutdown planning and supervise contract labour during outages and special projects.
The successful candidate must reside or be willing to relocate to a location within a one (1) hour commute from the Bottom Brook Converter Station and be available for after-hours emergency work and will be subject to an on-call rotation.
