About Us


The Department of Environment and Climate Change is now accepting applications for an Engineering Co-op student for a period of 16 weeks starting in May 2025. Candidates must provide proof of status as a full-time post-secondary co-op student and be scheduled to return to school in the next academic semester required for their program (Either September 2025 or January 2026) to be eligible for this position.

About Our Opportunity


Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change's role is to protect the environment, human health and animal health through regulatory excellence, conservation, partnership and promotion. To achieve this, we strive to develop legislation, regulations and policies, process notifications, applications, and approvals for regulated activities based on sound scientific knowledge and expertise.

Our goal is to educate, inspect, and enforce to ensure compliance with legislation and regulations. We also proactively respond to environmental, conservation, animal, and human health risks and work to develop programs and deliver services to enhance protection in these areas.

Primary Accountabilities


The Engineering Co-op Student will:

  • Learn from a dynamic group of skilled professionals how environmental mitigation and protection are managed in a field setting;
  • Assist Regional Engineers with review of industrial files, on-site sewage disposal system design, municipal water and wastewater treatment files, watercourse alteration files, environmental assessment registrations, contaminated site file, etc.
  • Execute assigned tasks as required by your supervisor,
  • Support other engineering initiatives within the team of Regional Engineers and across the Department as required.

Qualifications and Experience


As the ideal candidate, you must be registered in a co-op program and be a returning student in the next applicable semester of an environmental, civil, or chemical engineering program. You must also identify as a member of one of the Equity Groups that this position is designated for.

To be the successful candidate, you must:

  • Clearly indicate course work or experience related to water, wastewater, GIS, water resource management, hydrology, hydrogeology, climate change and/or database/data management in your resume
  • Have excellent communication and organization skills
  • Have experience in data analysis, problem solving and statistics
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills as well as excellent organizational skills
  • Must have the ability to determine priorities with minimal supervision and demonstrate the use of sound judgement and tact in dealing with a variety of people
  • Must be task oriented and self-motivated with good time management skills.
  • Must be proficient with 10 Microsoft Office products (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Having a valid Driver's License and experience using ArcGIS (e.g., ArcMap) would be considered an asset
