Job Summary
The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant - Engineer will conduct research activities involving non-destructive testing of utility poles within a lab setting as well as periodic field activities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Correlate electric signal to physical properties of utility poles and develop models to predicate the service life and protocols for utility poles maintenance and management.
  • Research and identify indicators reflecting health condition, and assess the integrity of timber structure.
  • Complete research on the utilization of flax shives including literature searches and conducting of experiments.
  • Carry out data analysis on large scale data sets. This will include field data collection regarding density, moisture, and residual level of wood preservatives of utility poles.
  • Maintain and operate complex reactors and instrumentation.
Note
The incumbent may periodically be required to work in field conditions for up to six hours at a time including loud equipment, inclement weather, and walking up to approximately 1 km as well as to work regularly in the lab with lab and utility pole fields. In addition, the incumbent may periodically be required to travel throughout Nova Scotia and to occasionally work outside of regularly scheduled hours. Scheduling and compensation will be in accordance with the collective agreement.

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in mechanical, chemical or electrical engineering plus two years' engineering experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience with model development, scientific literature review, data collection and analysis as well as experience supervising students.
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical skills along with strong attention to detail and organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Proven strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to lift up to ten lbs on a weekly basis, and walk periodically for up to six hours at a time in field conditions.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license
Assets
  • Experience in machining learning/dada management.
  • Professional Engineering designation.
