This role is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to your field of student and an understanding of what a career at Irving Shipbuilding can look like.
Aa a member of the HSE team, the Environmental Student is accountable (to the Senior Environmental Specialist) for the support, development, and implementation of day-to-day ISI environmental requirements, including application of the Environmental Management System, regulatory reporting, data analysis, wastewater treatment, HAZMAT management, environmental incidents/Investigations, and training.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Senior Environmental Specialist in data collection, analysis, preparation of reports and submission of reports to ECCC in support of the E2 and NPRI emissions program across all ISI operational sites.
  • Executes activities ranging from shipping of HAZMAT located from ISI storage areas, to ensuring all HAZMAT is properly packaged, profiled, and labeled prior to shipment (IAW TDG regulations). Also ensures ISI HAZMAT storage facilities conform/comply with Federal/Provincial/Municipal regulations (e.g. National Fire Code of Canada) where applicable, as well as ensure regular Inspections/Audits.
  • Supports the environmental aspects of operations and maintenance activities; including the development of procedures and risk assessments to mitigate and/or minimize the environmental effects of activities across ISI;
  • Provides field expertise and response related to oil and chemical releases and recommending best practices for remediation and clean-up of impacted sites and performing regulatory engagement and reporting as required. This includes performing regular spill kit inspections and restocking of all spill response kits.
  • Act as the operator of an in-situ wastewater treatment plant that discharges to domestic sewer, perform instrumentation troubleshooting, sensor calibrations, water sampling and provide support to identify wastes that can be processed at the plant. Collaborate with Facilities and Maintenance to schedule preventative maintenance and ensure deficiencies are repaired.

Qualifications

  • EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
    • 0-2 Years' Experience
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, openness to learning
    • Skilled in organizing and managing a variety of tasks with varying priorities and is a fast learner and effective problem solver
    • Requires a high level of professionalism, a strong work ethic, and demonstrated communication, problem solving, and analytical skills. You are a self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner. The successful candidate will have the ability to report clearly on outcomes to managers and directors of Irving Shipbuilding.
    • Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
    • Currently Enrolled in a 4-year Degree Program in any of the following Environmental Technologist, Bachelor of Science degree (preferably in Environment) or a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Chemical, Environmental, Civil).
