Job Summary
Dalhousie's Physics and Atmospheric Science Department is world-class leader in education and in research, offering programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. Reporting to the Administrator, the Machinist performs highly skilled precision work to manufacture, build, modify, totally design, or assist with design of novel one of a kind specialized apparatus, to enable Professors to demonstrate physics and to enable researchers to have customized equipment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Using both CNC and conventional methods, responsible for designing, machining, and or manufacturing unique specialized custom made parts by using milling machines, lathes, saws, grinders, and their associated tools, devices, and fixtures.
  • Produce parts independently from blueprints, sketches, pictures, samples, and verbal instruction.
  • Consulting with the end users to clarify the job design so that it is cost efficient to manufacture and to perform the functions they want it to perform.
  • Repair and maintain all shop equipment in our shops and the student shop, including preventive maintenance, and repair and rebuild as required. Train and supervise student shop users.
  • Advise and assist professors, researchers, instructors, and students in the selection and proper use of tooling, correct materials to select for best result of project they are working on and instruct on proper and safe use of same.
  • Responsible for organizing of tool storage areas and stock room.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Certification as a Machinist (Red Seal Certification), and completion of recognized Community College Machine Shop Course, plus five years experience working in a conventional machine shop (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Training in the use of CNC, lathes, milling machines, drill presses, surface universal grinders, etc., and in the use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience with CAD software.
  • A willingness and aptitude to learn new techniques, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Assets
  • Related experience in a prototype lab/university environment.
