Job Summary
The mission of Facilities Management is to provide the Dalhousie community with an inviting, safe and sustainable environment which supports and enhances an inspiring experience in learning, living, working and research. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Space Management, The Space Planner is responsible for space planning and generating proposed layout options for small-scale capital projects, performing space studies, as well as presenting findings and making recommendations on space-use that balance user-needs with Dalhousie's priorities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Investigates, collects, verifies, analyzes space data to address space needs and demands known and unknown on campus.
  • Negotiates space as required between units and formulate memorandums identifying space, time frame and assigned costs as required.
  • Assist in drafting necessary Request for Proposal, Request for quotes for space planning consulting services.
  • Generates analysis and reports on university and departmental space utilization rates, as well as comparisons with inter-institutional and system-wide or national surveys.
  • Develops and implements data-gathering methodology for use in programming new buildings and space, i.e., space data sheets for gathering departmental input on space types and quantities, occupants, features.
  • Provides professional advice on applicable building and fire codes, and other building and landscaping regulations etc. Coordinates consultants at Department, Faculty or Building level depending on project scope, as required.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in architecture, interior-design or in a related field plus, approximately three to five years' of relevant experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD, Revit, MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral as well as organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, team environment, take initiative and have a high level of autonomy.
  • Experience in community engagement.
  • Experience with public procurement and tendering procedures.
  • Understanding of a variety of space standards.
