About Our Opportunity


The Maintenance Officer 2 is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all institutional equipment, and mechanical installations. In this role, you will apply a variety of building and mechanical trade skills to plan, organize and direct inspection, maintenance and repair programs. You will ensure satisfactory operation of a large complement of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating and ventilation equipment.

Qualifications and Experience


You possess a Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent), a Nova Scotia Journeyman Provincial Certificate and at least 2 years' experience as a Journeyman in one of the following trades: Plumber, Construction or Industrial Electrician, Steam Fitter/Welder. Consideration may be given to 5 years experience working as a building operator with experience in plumbing, electrical, steam fitting, boilers or construction. Experience is required in operating a variety of power tools and machinery.

To be considered for this position, you will have a good working knowledge of current construction safety regulations and practices, be able to read and interpret specifications and drawings and complete work on schedule with a minimum of supervision. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a basic knowledge of correctional and security procedures.

Training in the following will be considered an asset: computer applications, WHMIS, Scaffolding Safety, Fall Protection, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Confined Space Awareness. Previous experience working in a secure environment would be a definite asset as the incumbent may supervise offenders.

During the interview, the successful candidate will demonstrate strong problem solving, decision making and organizational skills to complete tasks on time. Other required competencies are good communication and interpersonal skills when supervising others and the ability to write clear, concise notes and reports.

Working Conditions

Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.

May be required to work overtime on occasion.

This is a Permanent employment opportunity located in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Pay Grade: TR 14

Salary Range: $32.00 - $33.90 Hourly
