Position: Heavy Equipment Operator

Reports to: Construction Manager

Department: Construction

Direct Reports: None

The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.

Core Accountabilities

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Equipment Operator will operate equipment, contributing to efficient production at the worksite. The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective operation of the equipment under their control at the worksite.

Responsibilities

  • May operate heavy equipment including dozer, excavator, loader, packer, haul truck, etc.
  • Operate gasoline and diesel powered units
  • Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances
  • Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
  • Keep detailed and accurate reports and documentation
  • Perform trip inspections on equipment operated and load, ensuring safety and roadworthiness
  • Comply with applicable legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods, driver's hours of service, occupational health and safety, transportation of dangerous goods, customs and immigration and weights and dimensions is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
  • Check vehicles before driving them to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles.
  • Check all load-related documentation to ensure that it is complete and
  • Perform periodic inspections before, during, and after delivery to ensure that load is properly fastened down and is secure
  • Complete all necessary paperwork. May include, but not limited to, daily logs, inspection logs, delivery receipts, vehicle inspection, hours of service, etc.

Education & Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED status
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • Strong knowledge, skills and ability to operate required equipment as outlined below in a safe and responsible manner;
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage;
  • Knowledge of surface mining techniques and requirements;
  • Knowledge of job site traffic flows;
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures;
  • Knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures;
  • Ability to work independently and take direction;
  • Analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Decision making skills;
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills;
  • Ability to read, write, record, report, and maintain daily records;
  • Effective stress and time management skills;
  • Ability to demonstrate sound work ethics and professionalism;
  • Ability to deal with co-workers, contractors, supervisors, managers, and others with whom the incumbent works with, in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner;
  • Completion of a Heavy Equipment Operator Course.
  • Minimum 2 years of equipment experience.
  • Very good problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work as a team member
  • Familiarity with Yellowknives Dene language, culture and way of life would be considered assets

The Equipment Operator may be required to:

  • 24/7 availability may be required
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Travel to the site, and off-site locations will be required
  • Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
  • Overtime as required
  • Hazards associated with the trade
