JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Plant Engineer.

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN THUNDER BAY, ON.

Reporting to the Production Supervisor - Technical, this position is responsible to provide electrical / protection & control engineering technical support for the continuous safe and efficient operation of OPG's NorthWest Operations.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Plan, coordinate and conduct electrical engineering assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designs, and evaluations for generators, power systems transformers, control associated with hydroelectric generating stations and associated infrastructure.
  • Perform condition and risk assessments and provide recommendations with respect to life cycle management of electrical infrastructure.
  • Preparation of drawings, technical specifications, construction estimates, Request for Proposals, proposal evaluation, award, contract negotiations & administration & co-ordination, construction monitoring, resolution of contract disputes.
  • Provide input to business plans, work plans, budgets with respect to project priorities, schedules, and resource requirements.
  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and government agencies as required.
  • As a technical expert in electrical engineering provide advice, guidance, consultation, and services to engineering problems including:
        • Electrical/P&C engineering matters related to projects and Operations.
        • Electrical Programs such as Arc Flash and grounding assessments
  • Respond to emergencies, equipment failure, unsatisfactory equipment performance, conduct field investigations, prepare reports, and recommend actions.
  • Develop plans, standards and technical procedures for inspection, maintenance, and monitoring programs.
  • Serve on study, project teams or task groups.
  • Pre-start health and safety reviews, investigation of safety or technical incidents.

EDUCATION

  • 4 year Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited University
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario
  • P.Eng in good standing would be considered an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 2-8 years experience in an Electrical Engineering role;
  • Experience working in a Hydroelectric Generating Facility is preferred.
  • Experience working in an Industrial Power Systems or Utilities organization.
  • Knowledge of OPG systems and plants (asset).
  • Experience using AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the OH&S Act and Regulations, especially for Industrial Establishments (Ont. Reg. 851) & Construction (Ont. Reg. 213) in Ontario & the Ontario Electrical Safety Code & various codes and standards associated with electrical engineering and application of their requirements.
  • Experience with planning and conducting assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designing, evaluating, construction monitoring & maintenance of electrical works associated with hydroelectric generating stations.
  • Ability to Independently problem solve with methods and tools required for electrical engineering applications.
  • The Ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience with AC & DC systems, communication, generator, and protection / control systems, grounding, instrumentation, LV & MV systems & switchgear, oil containment, PLC's, transformers, teleprotections, and regulatory requirements.
  • Software associated with electrical engineering, monitoring and instrumentation, Power System Software, SCADA, Data Historians MS Suite of software & AutoCAD.
  • Experience in analysis in electrical testing & results.
  • Report preparation, and strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with people.
  • A result oriented, efficient & value-oriented focus, excellent verbal and written communicator, with high integrity to uphold company values including H&S, and protection of the environment;
  • Willingness to travel via road, airplane, float plane, helicopter etc. 25% of time.
  • Valid Class G Ontario driving license (or equivalent) in good standing.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
