JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, consultative & results driven professional to join our team in the role of Environmental, Chemical & Safety Technician/Technologist, based out of our Atikokan Generating station, in Atikokan, Ontario.

Reporting to the Environmental, Chemical & Safety Technician Supervisor, the Environmental, Chemical & Safety Technician/Technologist provides technical expertise in the areas of chemical, environmental and safety issues as they relate to OPG facilities, including workplace hazards and are responsible for interpreting environmental and health and safety legislation, chemical and waste management related to OPG operations.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Responsibilities are consistent with conventional and chemical safety training and experience in an industrial generating utility environment. In accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations:

  • Provide technical expertise and assist in the implementation of corporate and local programs and projects, as it relates to the areas of Environment, Health and Safety, and Emergency Management
  • Provide environmental expertise, monitoring and sampling to support programs such as: Waste management, TDG, HAZMAT, Designated Substances, Water/air quality, contaminated lands and site specific ECA requirements.
  • Provide health and safety expertise when developing safe work plans
  • Perform mathematical calculations and upload system data accordingly
  • Prepare and maintain reports and records

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus 2-years post-secondary study in a related field***

***Chemistry/Chemical Technician/Technology or Environmental Technician considered an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years of demonstrated hands-on experience as a Environmental, Chemical & Safety Technician/Technologist or similar role
  • Prior experience in industrial or hydro-electric workplaces preferred
  • Experience performing environmental field sampling is considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills required to work with both internal and external stakeholders and Government agencies.
  • Well versed in MS Office applications and advanced functionality including, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Must hold a valid G-class driver’s license in good standing.
  • Water treatment plant and/or demineralized water processing experience is an asset.
  • Wastewater Operator License Class 1 is an asset.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
