Description

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the building in a clean and orderly condition and maintain a schedule for the full cleaning and deep cleaning of the entire building.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean the building in a systematic and thorough manner including floors, walls, window, appliances, fixtures, washrooms, dorm rooms, transitional rooms, dining room, storage rooms, laundry rooms, program area, offices, hallways, entrance way.
  • Ensure that dormitory and transition units are thoroughly cleaned daily
  • Ensure all office spaces are thoroughly daily.
  • Keep supplies in stock and organized in designated supply/storage area
  • Collect and remove garbage in the proper procedure
  • Spot wash accessible walls
  • Report any safety issues, deficiencies and concerns to the Maintenance Worker
  • Maintain a clear and safe work environment
  • Comply with safety procedures including use of required safety equipment and identify unsafe practices or conditions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 40 hours per week.
  • The supervisor sets the hours of work and work schedule and flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop and lift more than 20 pounds.
  • May deal with angry and abusive clients.
  • May encounter verbal abuse.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Possess a valid First Aid CPR certificate.
  • Possess a valid WHIMIS certificate.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Prior related experience, including previous experience and familiarity with cleaning supplies and procedures.
  • Some knowledge of building maintenance procedures.
  • Possess a working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to work as a team member with other staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Willing to adhere to the philosophies, policies and values of The Salvation Army.
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
