Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Science & Monitoring, with matrix reporting to the Senior Manager, Watershed Planning and Source Protection, the Fluvial Geomorphologist is responsible for undertaking fluvial geomorphology monitoring and assessments and supporting the preparation of Watershed Plans.

  • Conduct field investigations of riverine systems by undertaking standard rapid and detailed geomorphological assessments, undertaking sediment composition and transport analyses, and characterizing channel morphology and floodplain dynamics.
  • Analyse and interpret field data, while also using ortho imagery, and other sources, to understand the behaviour and changes in riverine systems over time.
  • Use specialized software for developing models to analyse and simulate fluvial processes, including hydraulic modeling, sediment transport modeling, and erosion modeling.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate fluvial geomorphology principles into restoration projects, considering ecological, hydrological, and engineering requirements.
  • Use results of assessments to develop stream restoration and enhancement recommendations.
  • Prepare technical reporting and presentations based on project deliverables and provide technical input to proposals for public and private sector clients.
  • Support the Watershed Planning program and preparation of watershed plans with fluvial geomorphological data and analysis to improve the understanding of stream dynamics related to key natural resource issues and the impacts of climate change
  • Support organizational wide project development, with an enterprise-wide mindset.

Your Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience and a bachelor's degree related to geoscience, environmental or engineering discipline.
  • Professional Geoscientist designation.
  • Project management training, skills, and experience in project management and application of project management tools and techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of fluvial processes, river dynamics, sediment transport, and channel morphology including rapid assessments and detailed fluvial geomorphological assessments.
  • Knowledge of watershed modelling approaches and technical requirements such as 2D/3D flow modeling.
  • Excellent data analysis and quantitative skills, including statistical analysis.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written to present project recommendations to senior management, municipalities, and potentially the public, converting technical information and recommendations into language to be understood by a variety of audiences.
  • Expertise and experience in fluvial geomorphological assessment and monitoring approaches.
  • Proficiency in using GIS software for spatial analysis and mapping (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • In-depth knowledge of conservation and water management principles and policies.
  • Experience with watershed ecosystems, watershed planning processes and hydrology.
