Job Profile

We are currently accepting resumes for Temporary Labourer positions commencing April 2025.
Following submission of applications, the selection process outlined below will apply. Please note, only those applicants selected to interview will be contacted; however, applications will be kept on file for an additional 6 months and will be considered for any vacancies that may arise throughout the season.

Stage 1 Screening of Applications:
Screening will take place January 2025.

Stage 2 Interviewing Applicants:
Interviews will take place in February 2025.

What you will be doing

Parks positions:

  • Grounds maintenance such as: pruning trees and shrubs; grass cutting; trimming; digging; raking; leaf and garbage removal; playground equipment maintenance; sports field maintenance; minor carpentry work and general building maintenance.

  • Chainsaw experience/certification may be an asset.

  • Arena experience with ice resurfacer and basic refrigeration experience may be an asset.

  • Knowledge of turf, sports field maintenance and related equipment is preferred.

  • Experience with operation of small equipment (mowers, trimmers, brush chippers, etc.) and heavier equipment (trucks, trailers, tractors etc.) is preferred.

Cemetery positions:

  • Experience working in a cemetery environment is preferred.

  • Grounds maintenance such as: pruning trees and shrubs; grass cutting; trimming; digging; raking; leaf and garbage removal; minor carpentry work and general building maintenance.

  • Chainsaw experience/certification may be an asset.

  • Experience with operation of small equipment (mowers, trimmers, brush chippers, etc.) and heavier equipment (trucks, backhoe/loaders, tractors etc.) is preferred.

Horticulture positions:

  • Perform horticultural duties such as planting, maintaining, mulching and pruning of annual, perennial and shrub beds to enhance horticultural areas within parks, road allowance & traffic medians throughout the City of Cambridge.

  • Assist in garden design and plant selection.

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the safe and efficient use of all job related tools and equipment including line trimmers, rototillers, brush chippers, agricultural tractors, chainsaws, rotary mowers, leaf blowers, sod cutters, rakes, shovels etc.

  • Lead work of part-time staff and instruct them in the safe and efficient use, care and maintenance of tools and equipment, and completion of horticultural practices.

  • Perform watering duties at city gardens and downtown planters.

  • Propagate, grow, transplant and maintain various horticultural crops in the city greenhouse facility.

  • Assist with monitoring and determining the necessary growing conditions and control of all plant pests using an Integrated Pest Management approach.

  • Perform grass cutting and trimming of turf in selected locations.

Required Education & Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalency in Ontario (Proof of Diploma required upon offer of employment).

  • Must be 18 Years of age or older.

  • Must be Legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Minimum one year work related experience.

  • A valid Ontario Class G driver's license in good standing, with a driver's abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit point may be considered acceptable, considering the nature of infractions).

  • Valid Police Record and Judicial Matters Check is required (must be dated within the last six month). (Proof of check required upon offer of employment).

  • First Aid, CPR and WHMIS training preferred (proof of training/certificate required).

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public.

  • Ability to follow direction.

  • Confirmation that you are physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, as assessed through our third-party provider, prior to commencement in the position.

  • Knowledge of operating job-related equipment.

Your compensation

This position is located within our CUPE 32 (outside workers) compensation schedule and the hourly rate of pay is as follows (2025 rates):
Starting Rate: $25.27
Returning 2nd season rate: $26.02 (must meet criteria for returning employees)
Returning 2+ season rate: $26.80 (must meet criteria for returning employees)

Hours of work

Parks: 40 hrs/week, Monday to Sunday, shifts can be scheduled between 5:00am - 1:00am, 8 hrs/day as scheduled

Cemeteries: 40 hrs/week, Monday to Sunday, 8:00am - 4:00pm

Horticulture: 40 hrs/week, Monday to Sunday, shifts can be scheduled between 5:00am - 1:00am, 8 hrs/day as scheduled
