The Waste Processing Technologies Section under the Environment & Waste Technologies Branch conducts research and development on waste process chemistry and engineering science and technology. The team researches the science that underpins cost-effective solutions to the challenges in nuclear waste processing for recovery of valuable materials. The work in the section involves chemistry experiments, testing with small scale engineering setups, large scale process system testing and operation, and waste form specimen preparation and characterization in radioactive and non-radioactive lab settings. This is an exciting opportunity for a young scientist who is interested in research on science-based clean environment technology. What you will be doing:

  • Conducting experiments and set up experimental facilities.
  • Preparing, collecting, and testing samples and specimens.
  • Working with and supporting scientists and technical officers for drafting reports and papers in a team environment.
  • Operating and calibrating pH meters, conductivity meters, auto-pipettes, UV-spectrometer, etc.
  • Basic lab operation and duties.
  • Other duties as required.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Currently enrolled and attending a Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering related program.
  • Experience
    • Basic laboratory scale experiment experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Basic computer skills with word processing and EXCEL spreadsheet knowledge.
    • Ability to learn under supervision to design of experiments and develop procedures.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
