The successful Summer Student candidate will work with a team of researchers and technical officers in the Advanced Reactor Materials and Chemistry branch in several projects to support the development of Molten Salt Reactors. The candidate, with the help from CNL staff, will assist the design of equipment and apparatus to perform corrosion and electrochemical experiments in high temperature molten salts. It is crucial that the experimental conditions such as temperature, moisture, and oxygen contents will need to be strictly controlled and monitored. In addition, the environmental parameters will need to be recorded regularly during the entire duration of the experiments which may last for weeks or months. The successful candidate should have good knowledge of designing equipment and apparatus, particularly high-temperature high-pressure vessels, know how to implement sensors and control systems, and understand about data acquisition. Knowledge of AutoCAD, LabVIEW is desirable.

What you will be doing:

  • Designing of an experimental cell that allows to melt chloride and fluoride salts (e.g., KCl-MgCl2, FLiNaK) under a controlled inert atmosphere.
  • Designing of a gas supply system equipped with oxygen and moisture sensors.
  • Designing of a data acquisition system to record temperature, oxygen, and moisture contents.
  • Interacting with workshop to fabricate components.
  • Assisting the assemble and commission of the equipment.
  • Documenting the design and prepare manual instruction.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering program or equivalent fields.
  • Experience
    • Excellent knowledge of mechanical design
    • Knowledge about sensors, control systems, and data acquisition is essential.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Proficient in AutoCAD and LabVIEW
    • Good communication and writing skills
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
