The Environmental Biology and Toxicology section at Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) investigates the effects of contaminants on organisms from the cellular level to whole organisms. The selected student will have the opportunity to participate in ecotoxicity testing, invertebrate culture maintenance, as well as sample collection and analysis.

What you will be doing:

  • Working closely with common invertebrate species commonly used in aquatic toxicity testing.
  • Performing water chemistry analysis to verify aquatic invertebrate living conditions are within accepted criteria.
  • Contributing to routine care of invertebrate cultures.
  • Participating in ecotoxicity and biological testing analysis of biological samples.
  • General lab duties

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Currently enrolled in an applicable program such as Environmental Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry
  • Experience
    • Experience performing basic laboratory procedures (pH measurements, pipetting, dilutions, etc) would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Keen interest in environmental biology.
    • Ability to learn and follow procedures.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Cooperation and teamwork skills.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
