Architectural Systems Specialist

The Architectural System Specialist is accountable to the Energy and Infrastructure Management Architectural Section Head for operating and maintaining the Architectural Systems at CRL facilities and Deep River buildings. Responsibilities will include optimum operation of all building architectural systems and equipment to ensure peak operational efficiency and reliability as well as providing safe, hazard free work environment to customers. This duty shall be carried out within the confines of the Buildings & Structures (Site Operations) program plans, defined budgets and schedule.

The purpose of this position is Asset Management of the Building Envelope at CRL and Deep River. It is needed to ensure that routine operation, scheduled preventive maintenance, and strategic upgrades are planned and executed as part of a defined program.

Executing the position's mandate will slow the deterioration of CRL's building architectural systems, and ensure that they are replaced before failure.

It will reduce the volume of emergent work due to breakdowns, and the capital cost to replace prematurely worn-out equipment. As maintenance and strategic upgrades stabilize the condition of our assets, CNL will experience the restoration of our ability to provide "laboratory conditions" to staff in our Research and Development branches.

What will you be doing!

• Monitor progress on design activities against standards and objectives for project implementation
• Review contractor quotes, submittals, schedules, reports, costs/ invoices, etc. and ensures scope requirements are met for each change order.
• Provides project lead and contractor representative support.
• Perform field inspections for projects and Infrastructure work.
• Provides advice and leads the development of practical and economical solutions to specific problems encountered by projects.
• Monitor and control Architectural systems.
• Maintain building envelope and assets at lowest life cycle cost and identify cost reduction opportunities.
• Maintain a Deferred Maintenance program for architectural systems.
• Prepare scope of work documents and requirements for upgrading and retrofitting of existing facilities.
• Perform Facility and Infrastructure evaluations complete with status reports.
• Initiate and maintain all related processes including requests for quotes, procurement, change control, integrated work control, and scope change management.
• Investigate and authorize work requests.
• Liaise with trades and contractor personnel for carrying out maintenance activities and/or renovation activities.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

• Education
  • Graduation from an institute of technology in an architectural-related discipline or 10 years experience in related maintenance and construction.
• Experience
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in architectural-related maintenance and construction
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work in a team environment and with minimum supervision. Understanding of project management.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communications skills; the ability to disseminate information to other team members and clients and strong team problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Must have the ability to work smoothly and effectively with customers, technical staff, colleagues and management.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, changing tasks without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Strong knowledge of facility management and maintenance would be an asset.
  • Have a good base knowledge of the National Building Code, Canada Labour Code, WHMIS, CNSC regulations, and other codes pertaining to life safety such as Ontario Regulations dealing with hazardous products such as asbestos-containing materials.

• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
