What will you be doing!
CNL's Environment & Waste Technologies Branch performs a wide range of research and development work in areas such as radioecology, waste processing, environmental modeling, hydrogeology, low level radiological analysis, and molecular biology and toxicology. We are looking for a Chemical Technologist to support projects within our Waste Processing Technologies Section. The successful candidate will be part of a well established team of professionals and technologists specializing in the fields of waste processing and environmental remediation technologies. Research activities within this section cover the areas of nuclear waste processing, used fuel processing to provide processed materials for recycling or safe disposal, nuclear waste disposal and development of technologies for remediation of radioactively and chemically contaminated waters and soils.

The main mandate/function of this position is carrying out experimental work in the areas noted above. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering on commitments related to R&D for the needs of Federal Agencies, projects for internal customers, as well as Commercial Projects. The incumbent is expected to develop and maintain core competencies for emerging opportunities in the above and related fields.

  • Providing technical assistance in the waste processing research activities.
  • Carrying out all responsibilities safely and accurately by strictly following protocols and procedures.
  • Completing daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly activities related to routine laboratory operations such as equipment calibration, housekeeping, and waste disposal coordination.
  • Setting up of experimental and production facilities for R&D and commercial projects.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a program of Chemical Technology, Chemistry, Physics or Engineering, or equivalent formal education plus relevant experience OR
    • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Experience in chemical laboratory practices and safety procedures
    • Some chemical engineering laboratory operational experience
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Basic computer skills with word processing and spreadsheet knowledge
    • Basic skills in assembling bench scale experimental setups and rigs
    • Good technical writing skills
    • Ability to learn under supervision to design experiments and develop procedures
    • Ability to troubleshoot technical/experimental problems
    • Ability to make decisions to ensure safety in the laboratory
    • Able to make sound decisions and recommendations based on scientific understanding, simulation and experimental results and observations
    • Able to articulate and convince others of his/her decisions and recommendations
    • Knowledgeable in the QA requirements for R&D activities
    • Knowledgeable in chemical laboratory practices and safety procedures
    • Working knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and equipment
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."
