The Civil Engineer is a member of a multi-disciplinary branch providing integrated project management, engineering, design and construction services for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities, and R&D experiments at the CRL site. Under general direction from the Branch Manager, the Civil Engineer will contribute to the development of conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs of civil structures, provide leadership, training, mentoring and guidance, and support development of the civil/structural group.
What will you be doing !
Providing expert input and performing complex engineering tasks covering all phases of a project from design to field support (as required).
Supporting the leadership team in mentorship and technical oversight of staff; supporting the development of technical competency within the civil/structural group (technicians and engineers).
Guiding the work of several professional engineers and technologists, coordinating schedules and assigning tasks to reach an overall objective within cost, quality and time requirements.
Being assigned as a design job leader including job management and execution oversight.
Being responsible for the delivery of engineering deliverables within their section; providing job updates and status reports to management;
Managing schedule and budgets for assigned work.
Supervising engineering deliverables within their assigned section when appropriate.
Designing new structures, retrofits, and modifications to existing structural engineering systems.
Leading the design and analysis of custom designed elements for construction support such as below the hook lifting devices, fall arrest systems, shoring system, etc.
Performing load assessments on existing structures.
Preparing the design documentation including concept reports, design requirements, design descriptions, design manuals, design guides, technical specifications, and technical notes.
Providing engineering support during the construction, installation and commissioning project phases.
Acting as a customer liaison.
Providing subject matter expert review and acceptance of designs prepared by outside agencies.
Developing engineering specifications and standards facilitating a consistent design approach.
Supporting hiring, onboarding, and development of engineers to the group.
Maintaining skills required for work assignments.
Job leadership roles to manage the delivery of multi-discipline projects, when appropriate.
Management and Administrative duties include, but are not limited to, supporting office and field requirements as applicable.
Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
Education
At a minimum, a Bachelors (Honours) degree in civil engineering from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
Experience
12+ years of relevant Civil Engineering experience
Demonstrated performance in providing engineering oversight to various sizes of jobs.
Experienced in the technical procurement process, including supplier qualification reviews, bid evaluations, review and acceptance of technical deliverables and monitoring contractor performance vs. technical specifications.
Demonstrated effective team leadership and team-building skills.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in technical matters, to routinely solve technical problems and to make independent decisions.
Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and interact with staff at various levels of the organization.
Ability to lead a team of engineers and collectively achieve project milestones.
Excellent oral and written English communication skills; previous experience making technical presentations to small and large audiences.
Security Clearance Eligibility Required
Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires that the majority of time worked be at CNL's Chalk River Laboratory site while also providing opportunities to work remotely, where possible, if desired by the employee.
