If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! Our Chalk River location is looking for an Environmental Electronic Technologist to provide electronic and equipment support for the Environmental Monitoring Branch (EMB).

What will you be doing!

  • Operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating environmental monitoring instrumentation across the CRL property and New Power Demonstration.
  • Maintaining and repairing branch radiation detection systems.
  • Interacting with internal staff and external vendor(s) to successfully troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Assisting in raising/developing the required requests/documentation to obtain internal and external support.
  • Serving as the CNL representative, providing instrumentation support to NRCan's seismic station at CRL on behalf of the Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS).
  • Serving as the CNL representative, providing instrumentation support to Environment Canada's Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network (CAPMoN) station.
  • Assisting in maintaining Laboratory Quality Control for all analytical equipment used, including performance trending and the use of laboratory QC samples, as specified in the appropriate technical procedures.
  • Assisting in the performance of laboratory radiological and non-radiological analyses of environmental samples as required, following approved technical procedures and within approved timeframes.
  • Supporting the verification and reporting of results within the branch Laboratory Information Management System to meet supervisors' and customers' expectations.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of emergency response equipment and systems, e.g., Ambient Radiation and Meteorological Monitoring System (ARMMS).
  • Participating in a rotating on-call roster list and be available to participate in the annual site-wide exercise drill with Emergency Preparedness and related training.
  • Maintaining a record of respirator fit tests to allow the use of a C4 respirator, if needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized Institute of Advanced Technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position (e.g. Electronic Technology, Instrumentation, and Control Program)
    • Two to five (2-5) years of pertinent technological experience OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has five to ten plus (5-10+) years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education, and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Experience in system electronics troubleshooting, problem analysis, and problem assessment.
    • Experience with radio frequency telemetry and serial transmission protocols would be an asset.
    • Demonstrated skills and abilities pertaining to electronic repair, such as soldering and component replacement, at the circuit board level.
    • Knowledge and experience with scientific databases, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Access, Excel, and Word.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to safe workshop and fieldwork practices are essential.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Ability
    • Assume responsibility and work with a minimum of supervision.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with interfacing instruments and instrumentation to computers and logging equipment.
    • Troubleshooting skills with complex analog and digital circuits using electronic test equipment, including the oscilloscope, digital voltmeter, signal generator, etc.
    • Provide support on short notice and work flexible schedules to ensure compliance monitoring is met and emergency requests are addressed.
    • Mechanically skilled as required for adapting and mounting equipment on towers.
    • Translate instructions, problem descriptions, or needs into work requirements.
    • Follow existing procedures and assist in developing new procedures.
    • Interface with supervision and effectively communicate deficiencies and convey required information for the evaluation of breakdowns.
    • Multitask on several projects and communicate effectively with work groups at all levels, such as planning coordinators.
    • Possess good organizational skills and record-keeping and will involve updating databases and reporting with spreadsheets.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:

  • Physical ability for climbing towers ranging from 4 to 100m, hoisting and lifting equipment.
  • Operation of 4-wheel drive vehicle in off-road conditions and a valid "G" driver's license is required.
  • Installation and removal of batteries weighing approximately 50 lbs.
  • Working outside in all weather conditions can be expected, which may involve working at temperature extremes. Additionally, the work may entail encounters with various wildlife, including black flies, mosquitoes, and bears.
