Our Chalk River location is looking for an Environmental Specialist to be heavily involved in training and communicating the environmental mitigation measures to the team. What will you be doing!

  • Assisting the Capital Projects team and the construction team to finalize the required documents that outline the environmental requirements prior to the start of the construction period.
  • Preparing communication and training material for the Capital Projects and the construction teams providing the key messages in terms of mitigation measures to be implemented and inspections frequency requirements.
  • Providing technical reviews and responses to the different requests from the contractors in terms of implementation of the compliance documentation.
  • Engaging and actively interacting with the Capital Projects construction teams to ensure the implementation of the environmental compliance documents in the construction activities and proposing feasible and achievable means to ensure compliance with regulatory documentation.This can include development of inspection logs and / or operational procedures.
  • Conducting field walkdowns and inspection of the construction sites to ensure compliance with mitigation measures identified in the environmental compliance documents.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Honours Bachelor in Biology, Science, Environmental or related field from a university of recognized standing or membership in scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Experience
    • Work experience with environmental management best industry practices is required.
    • Work experience in a nuclear facility would be desirable.
    • Work experience in field inspection to ensure compliance with Federal requirements is required.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Excellent knowledge of Federal and Ontario environmental laws and regulations is required.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
    • Effective written communication skills is required to capture the outcome and resolution of engagement initiatives.
    • Ability to interact effectively with managers and staff of facilities, laboratories, and support groups, and to work as a part of a team is required.
    • Ability to assess work conditions and quickly identify non-compliances and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
    • Some knowledge of ISO-14001 standards and its application is desirable.
    • Familiarity with use of data management and project management software is highly desirable.
    • Good organizational and project management skills are required.
    • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft office software including Access, Excel and Word is required.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:

  • This work requires work in the field including under several weather conditions. The field work would involve walking long distance in a forested environment and being outside for an extended period of time.
  • The office working environment is offered in a cubicle and or shared space setting.
  • Office work environment 60% / Field work required 40%

Location:

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires that the majority of time worked be at CNL's Chalk River Laboratory site while also providing opportunities to work remotely, where possible, if desired by the employee.
