What will you be doing!

  • Reviewing fire hazard analyses, assessments, and other fire safety documentation for compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Completing fire safety assessments associated with the Fire Protection screening process.
  • Completing or reviewing FHA's as required.
  • Reviewing and evaluating requests for fire safety exemptions and equivalencies.
  • Describing the conditions to be considered when inspecting and testing fire protection systems so as to be able to verify or validate design features.
  • Conducting project inspections and witness tests of buildings and fire protection systems to determine compliance with plans and specifications, and applicable standards and regulations.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine compliance with the fire protection requirements of applicable standards and regulations.
  • Providing oversight of the site fire protection and fire department emergency services programs and their implementation.
  • Reviewing the adequacy of contractor fire protection programs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, Departmental Orders, standards, guides, and accepted "Improved Risk" practice.
  • Assisting with the preparation/review of the inspection, testing and maintenance procedures for fire equipment/systems in accordance with the applicable codes and standards.
  • Coordinating the implementation of an electronic monitoring system for inspection and testing on fire equipment/systems.
  • Developing a training component for the firefighters to perform their duties with regards of the inspection and testing of fire equipment/systems.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Bachelor Degree (Honours) in engineering or applied science from a university of recognized standing
  • Experience
    • Five to seven (5-7) years of related experience or other fire protection. Candidates with Fire Protection, Mechanical or Civil Engineering are given preference.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Good understanding of the National Building Code, National Fire Code and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and CSA N-293 and CSA-N393 standards and their applications and ability to keep abreast of any changes.
    • Ability to provide technical expertise for the improvement of CRL fire protection equipment/systems (best technology) and their suitability for protection from fire.
    • Verify the inspection, test and maintenance required for typical fire protection equipment/systems.
    • Maintain proficiency in fire protection engineering and fire department emergency services concepts and practices through continued education, training, and periodic review of fire protection codes and standards, which apply to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and its contractors.
    • Ability to plan and organize meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL's Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
