JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Electrical Engineering Specialist.

Reporting to the Manager - P&C Engineering, this position is responsible to provide exciter technical specialist support to the OPG generator fleet (Hydro, Thermal, and Nuclear) and manage the OPG exciter program.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide technical oversight of static and rotating exciters in the OPG fleet of generators, including on-site support as required across Ontario
  • Manage compliance activities and testing, including directly interfacing with regulatory bodies (e.g. IESO) including model verifications and review of test and simulation reports
  • Work with engineering teams around the province as a single point of contact and mentor for exciter technologies, protections and controls, and regulatory compliance
  • Have extensive experience and knowledge of existing exciter technologies, models, and manufacturers
  • Work in the field alongside maintenance teams across the province to prepare and execute troubleshooting procedures and support emergent and regular maintenance activities
  • Oversee a team of engineers to manage and track exciter condition across the fleet, and develop and implement strategies, various processes, tests, and governance
  • Be the technical lead and engineering representative for exciters in major projects such as system replacements and station refurbishments, including preparing technical specifications for exciter procurement, attending factory acceptance testing, and final commissioning

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Science
  • Minimum 10 years' of progressive experience in an electrical engineering role (preferably in power generation)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with excitation systems, the overall process of power generation, and the exciter's integration into the station's protections and controls; experience with hands-on excitation systems work, including performing any of the following tasks offline/online: troubleshooting, setting changes, logic changes, oscilloscope use and analysis of all collected data
  • Strong power converter knowledge including ratings, limits, and control methodologies (including for parallel redundant systems)
  • Working knowledge of/experience with relevant market rules pertaining to excitation systems and associated protections and controls
  • Strong knowledge of NERC Standard MOD-026 Reverification requirements and ability to provide field support for testing
  • Fluency in ABB Unitrol 5000/6000, Cutler-Hammer/Basler DECS, Reivax RTX, GE Silcomatic IV, V, GE EX2100, and vintage analog systems (Westinghouse, Beel, etc.)
  • Ability to interface with vendor experts to solve complex technical problems spanning various technologies (circuit boards, logic, protection, physical construction, etc.)
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
