Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, the successful candidate will act as the primary interface between Design Engineering and Manufacturing; essentially you will be the "Go To" person and will coordinate all product design changes for the products built at the assembly plant.

This will be a 100% on-site role located in Guelph, ON.

Performance Expectations:

  • Prepare concept, and design and production drawings with supporting calculations and material data ensuring that designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Design, formulate and produce complete product related changes for current products in a continuous improvement environment. Improve warranty, ease of assembly, and expand product options for production.
  • Investigate and resolve bill of material (BOM) issues.
  • Maintain thorough documentation for all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Work with manufacturing and engineering teams to provide cost effective solutions to design challenges.
  • Provide support in checking details, assemblies and BOMs for assigned projects.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate Design Engineers.
  • Apply a wide variety of established or modified engineering methods or techniques with considerable independence of action.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Credentials:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or C.E.T. in a Mechanical or Electrical discipline.
  • Preference will be given to candidates registered or working towards their P.Eng designation.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Mechanical / Electrical designer in a heavy equipment (or related) manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding/fabrication processes.
  • Design experience with SolidWorks (with formal training preferred); experience with FEA desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding / fabrication processes, hydraulic controls and general electrical skills.
  • Design experience with SolidWorks (with formal training preferred); experience with FEA desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with a cross functional technical team as well as with manufacturing personnel.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
