Summary:

This summer student position will assist in the day-to-day needs of the Capital Works team within the Engineering Department. This role will report to a Manager, Infrastructure and Capital Projects. The successful candidate will receive mentorship and training to support their role and career development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interact with property owners, developers, consulting firms, external agencies, and internal city service departments to support capital projects and related tasks.
  • Coordinate and participate in department meetings.
  • Lead the update and formatting of forms, forms, templates, manuals, and other documents for the capital engineering group as required.
  • Conduct field inspections, as needed to support capital projects.
  • Assist City project managers in reviewing RFPs, TTM, for consistency, accuracy, and mathematical checks.
  • Perform quantity take-offs from engineering drawings to verify consultants' tender information.
  • Develop comment response matrices to support project managers in reviewing submissions.
  • Circulate Project Notices (e.g., DIN, PICs) to relevant stakeholders.
  • Organize and file completed detailed design and construction projects documentation, identifying discrepancies or missing information.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce quality results.
  • Willingness to learn new software and ability to apply it.
  • Capable of working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and strong technical writing skills.
  • High levels of integrity, always doing the right thing in an ethical, fair, and sustainable way.
  • Ability to learn the approval process, including design guidelines and standards.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or ArcMap is an asset.

Duration and Hours

  • Summer term, typically including May - August 2025.
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, 35 hours per week (excluding Holidays).

Location

  • City of Markham office at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON.
  • Occasional off-site visits within City of Markham to support capital projects.
