Job Duties:

  • Performs manual labour, generally as part of a crew, and to operate light vehicles/equipment and accessories/hand tools for parks maintenance/repair work as assigned.
  • Operates equipment including 5-tonne and 1-tonne trucks with hoist, tractors, mowers, loaders, accessory equipment such as trailers, hand mowers, trimmers, chainsaw, jackhammer, etc. for purpose of maintenance and repair work related to parks/trails/sports fields, outdoor ice rinks, snow removal etc.
  • Debris and garbage pick-up, grass-cutting, asphalt/gravel patching, sod repair and seeding/patching, aerating, fencing, etc. and Winter Control operations including snow plowing/removal, sanding/salting, hand shoveling, debris removal, etc. for compliance with Division standards
  • Performs duties safely abiding by all applicable legislation and Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in overtime shift work and rotational standby as assigned.
  • Provides backup support to other Operations Labourer/Drivers as directed.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum High School graduate or equivalent plus a minimum of 3 years Parks maintenance.
  • Demonstrated experience in and working knowledge of parks maintenance, preferably in an urban environment.
  • Experience operating a range of light vehicles/equipment and hand tools, and with Winter Control operations.
  • Ability to skillfully operate and perform routine maintenance & inspections on a full range of vehicles, equipment & tools required for the duties as described above.
  • Valid DZ licence and maintenance of Ontario Class DZ Driver's licence required or willing to obtain within 6 months of start date. As a condition of employment, you will be required to provide a satisfactory driver's abstract (No demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions - max of one moving and one non-moving conviction). May be required to participate in both written and road tests.
  • Must be willing and available for overtime and rotational stand-by as required.
  • Must be physically able to perform the bona fide duties of the job.
  • Demonstrates excellent work habits by completing quality work as assigned within deadlines, taking initiative to assume additional tasks, projects, etc.
  • Reporting to work, standby, and overtime on time and in a dependable manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep accurate and fulsome records.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions by applying guidelines and procedures that require some interpretation in dealing with exceptions. Seeks guidance when the situation is unclear.
