Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Transportation Planning, you will be an integral member of the transportation planning group responsible for coordinating and managing various transportation planning studies and the review of development-related transportation studies made under the Planning Act, including official plan amendments, secondary plans, plans of subdivision, zoning by-law amendments, site plan control, minor variance and consents (severance) applications.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

As a Transportation Engineer, you will

  • Review technical submissions including transportation impact assessments, parking studies, functional designs, transportation demand management plans, etc. to ensure conformance with applicable City and industry standards, guidelines, and policies.
  • Communicate and liaise with various stakeholders in the development process, including developers, consultants, planners, lawyers, architects, and other City departments.
  • Conduct technical investigations, analyses, surveys and research to resolve complex transportation issues.
  • Prepare reports, memoranda, briefing notes, and presentations.
  • Respond to queries and represent the City at meetings with the public, external agencies and stakeholders, and at Ontario Land Tribunal and judicial court proceedings.
  • Project manage external consulting services for transportation planning.

Minimum Education & Qualifications

  • Licensing as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario, in good standing, with a university degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in transportation planning and/or engineering.
  • Proven understanding of various transportation planning and traffic engineering theories.
  • Familiarity with urban travel demand forecasting and strong understanding of transportation/traffic demand modelling software applications.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and standards including Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Traffic Manuals and TAC's Geometric Design Guidelines.
  • Proficiency in the use of Synchro/SimTraffic and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and AutoTURN is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with developers, consultants, contractors, elected officials, and other internal and external clients and stakeholders.
  • Highly developed personal, interpersonal, presentation and teamwork skills, with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all organizational levels.
  • Ability to attend meetings at various locations throughout Markham and York Region, during and outside regular business hours.
  • Familiarity with safety on construction sites and near roadways.
  • A valid Ontario Driver's License - Class G and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.
