Position Summary...

The Sr. Manager Construction role will serve as a program lead and for one (or more) of Walmart Canada’s key strategic programs (including but not limited to Remodels, Refresh, Omni) so that construction delivers a consistent, cost-effective, and quality product that maintains alignment with current company priorities while streamlining cross functional communications and change management.
The role will drive program-specific execution strategy, promote program consistency, improve and implement program processes, and provide external and internal business partners with a single program point of contact.
The Sr. Mgr will be responsible for execution strategy, process improvement, team consistency, program-level interface/communications, and management of 3rd party resources as required for his/her respective program(s).

What you'll do...

1. Implements and leads the execution strategy for the respective program(s), tailoring the approach to the program’s specific needs so that quality, schedule, and budget are optimized.Challenges timeline assumptions and deep dives with external Gen. Contractor Partners, Format Implementation Team, and Construction Managers to prove out durations and minimize disruption.Trains Construction Managers/Renovation Managers on the strategy and responsible for consistency.

2. Executes complex, time-critical, and high-visibility projects that require the highest degree of proficiency in risk/change management, communication, and technical ability.

3. Reports and Tracks Program-Level budgets, identifies trends across all projects with the program and offers solutions to the business for addressing pain-points.

4. Establishes processes for the program(s) based on inputs from Construction and Cross-Functional Partners and works directly with the Process/Analytics Team to leverage existing systems and drive efficiency in day-to-day activities and reporting.Responsible for implementing processes consistently across Construction Managers and Renovation Managers.

5. Represents the respective program(s) to the broader organization as well as external partners (vendors, General Contractor Owners/Client Leads) and serves as a single point of contact to streamline incoming and outgoing communications/changes relevant to the program.

6. Manages and trains 3rd party resources that are hired to support increased project workload demands; reviews 3rd party budget forecasts, bid forms/results, and ensures design reviews and store communication are meeting internal standards.

7. Influences design decisions from a constructability perspective, driving upstream improvement of design documents in close partnership with Design Team Leadership.Provides examples to highlight areas of opportunity and is the primary contact for Design when it comes to construction feedback for a respective program.

8. Prepares and presents program updates to leadership, pulling together information from Construction Managers/Renovations Managers in a manner that effectively communicates status, budget/schedule risks, and any request for decisions from the business with the recommended options.Attends program/strategy/finance meetings with Sr. Mgr and Director Level Leadership.

Qualifications

  • Technical: Project Management experience and background; creation and management of multiple project budgets and tracking within project management software; retail project experience and understanding of phasing to minimize business disruption; reads construction drawings proficiently; construction contracts and industry regulations.
  • Proficient in MS Office and understands navigation of SAP or similar controls software.
  • Business skills: Translates overall business strategy to the tactical execution of projects; maintains an ‘Owner’s” mentality when evaluating risks and costs; leverages business data (disruption / sales / market analysis) from other teams to inform decisions
  • Leadership skills: Leads by example – this position will require management of more complex projects while simultaneously leading and influencing others that may not have a direct reporting relationship but are working within a given program.
  • The individual will need to act as a mentor and improve the performance of the overall team. The ability to represent the entire team professionally is a must.
  • General Knowledge areas: Construction principles and standards; managing to a contract; construction design processes; project budgeting and estimating; project scheduling; familiar with lease terms and legal obligations as well as real estate and development cost sharing structures.
  • Minimum Education Required College Certificate or Diploma
  • Minimum Years of Experience Required 6 - 8 years
  • 25% Travel Across Canada, primarily in Eastern Canada
