This position is moving to OPG Corporate Headquarters: In Summer 2025, OPG will officially welcome employees to our new Corporate Headquarters located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. This new space will enable teamwork, collaboration and innovation that will help us achieve our mission to electrify life in one generation. This position will temporarily based in Toronto, ON until the move to Headquarters in the Summer of 2025.

JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Section Head Interconnected Settlements.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Settlements, this position is responsible to supervise section consisting of both analytical and clerical staff. Ensure the accuracy of OPG invoices and/or bills for bilateral and interconnected utility customers. Oversee confirmation, verification and reconciliation activities conducted by section staff with counterparts of bilateral customers and interconnected utilities and ensure that payments to be received/forwarded are accurate and reflect services/products provided.

Resolve problems identified by staff during reconciliation activities with counterparties. Develop and maintain departmental staff competency. Work with bilateral customers, independent system operators, interconnected utility counterparties and confirm transacted quantities/details of services provided. Make quality and comparative assessments of the business's performance as pertains to bilateral and interconnected utility transactions.

Coordinate documentation for submission to external and government agencies. Work with an established network of internal and external contacts to secure, protect and advance the interests of Business Unit and OPG. Keep abreast of current developments in the electricity market and utility industry trends.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Administer and supervise work of staff, being accountable for staff output and performance.
  • Assign time targeted tasks, setting effective context, specifying quality, quantity, time to completion and resources.
  • Monitor progress and quality, conduct reviews of staff progress, accountabilities and output.
  • Prepare work programs, plan, schedule and budget for these programs and ensure that they are implemented.
  • Provide for a safe and healthy work environment. Ensure that staff participate in appropriate safety training programs.
  • Provide leadership through demonstration and response to requirements to achieve targets, quality and quantity of objectives.
  • Carry out performance assessments of staff and assess their training needs.
  • Address labour issues, application of union agreements, work to resolve conflicts, co-ordinate and integrate group's work toward achieving business unit's work program.
  • Ensure that the settlement processes used by OPG for transactions with bilateral customers and with interconnected utilities conform to established guidelines. Advise Settlements Department manager of any non-compliance situations and suggest appropriate remedial actions to rectify.
  • Initiate dispute resolution proceedings with bilateral customer or interconnected utility customer for any concerns that could not be resolved through informal discussion.
  • Keep abreast of current developments in areas of deregulated electricity market and pricing of term options, utility industry trends for development of plans, processes, policies and programs.
  • Take a lead role or participate on project teams to resolve issues and implement solutions. Facilitate the training of staff on electricity markets and settlement marketing.
  • Make quality and comparative assessments of business performance. Identify opportunities for strategic redirection.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic redirection. Track OPG performance on an ongoing basis and initiate changes to bidding/operations as appropriate.
  • Coordinate the documentation for submission to external and government agencies (e.g. Ontario Energy Board). Facilitate the process to prepare senior staff in the presentation of testimony as required.
  • Provide expert advice to OPG - Energy Markets management and OPG management regarding settlement processes.
  • Stay current on market rules evolution and take lead role in making necessary changes to Back Office processes.
  • Support development of contracts and agreements with customers and assist in negotiation of such contracts from a settlement perspective. Assist with the negotiation, administration and monitoring of electricity sales contracts.
  • Work with an established network of internal and external contacts to secure, protect and advance the interests of OPG and OPG - Energy Markets. Represent business interests on external committees and associations.
  • Work with other internal, external, utility/non-utility organizations to establish areas of partnership for the mutual benefit of each organization.
  • Other Duties as Required

EDUCATION

  • 4-year University education in the appropriate field such as Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, Computer Science or Engineering, or by having the equivalent level of education
  • MBA is considered an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Over 10 years and up to 12 years is considered necessary to gain this experience
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.
  • Requires experience to become familiar with an energy markets function or with energy derivative products and services.
  • Requires experience to become familiar with financial markets settlement systems, market operations, data analysis, regulatory reporting, and accounting principles.
  • Requires experience to have acquired a working knowledge of trading commodities or financial instruments, risk management principles and associated tools.
  • Requires practical experience to have gained an understanding of characteristics of generation station operation including hydroelectric generation, thermal generation and nuclear generation.
  • Requires experience to become familiar with the technical interactions and related commercial transactions between large power systems that are interconnected with one other.
  • Requires experience in a commercial environment, including intelligence gathering and negotiation activities.
  • Requires a good working knowledge of personal computer applications, including Internet and internal software and systems.
  • Requires experience in the supervision of staff.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package.
