Your Role on our Team: In this role, you will report to the Director, Tax and contribute to the strategic direction of the function and ensure income tax filings are completed accurately and on time. The Income Tax Manager will be responsible for a range of Income tax functions and initiatives including Income tax compliance and tax provision, cash tax management, assisting in tax audit management, assisting in the implementation of tax planning initiatives, and monitoring Minto Apartment REIT’s mutual fund trust and REIT status.

In this role, you will:

Tax Compliance

  • Prepare and review our Canadian tax returns (corporations, trusts, partnerships, and UHT)
  • Prepare tax packages for joint venture partners
  • Manage and monitor Minto Apartment REIT’s mutual fund trust and REIT status
  • Prepare annual returns for foreign reporting in Canada (T1134, T106, Country by Country Reporting, and Pillar II reporting)
  • Assist in calculation of EIFEL and Global Minimum Tax
  • Assist with the outsourcing of the US tax return preparation
  • Continually improving and streamlining the tax compliance process

Tax Financial Reporting and Audit Management

  • Prepare and review quarterly and annual financial tax reporting requirements which include income tax provisions and mutual fund trust test calculations and disclosure requirements under IFRS.
  • Liaise with external and CRA auditors

Tax Projections

  • Accurately prepare the REIT test projections
  • Assist with cash tax forecasting within the Minto’s annual budget and strategic corporate plans
  • Management of income tax instalments and income taxes payable

Tax Planning

  • Collaborate with finance teams and business units to ensure our tax strategies and policies are implemented accurately
  • Assist in the creation of tax planning solutions to minimize tax risk and maximize tax benefit
  • Assist in the implementation and execution of tax planning strategies and initiatives
  • Monitor legislative changes in Canada that may impact Minto and work to address any consequences of such changes.

Other Duties

  • Assist in implementing and maintaining controls and procedures
  • Ongoing research on income tax issues that arise
  • Other duties/projects as assigned
  • Maintain the legal entity corporate organizational chart

We would like you to have:

Education:

  • Degree in accounting, finance or business administration
  • CPA designation
  • CICA In-depth Tax Course Parts I to III or Master in Taxation

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a complex business environment or CA firm
  • Minimum 2 years specializing in corporate income tax

Specialized Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Real Estate tax knowledge and solid understanding of Canadian tax
  • Experience in preparing consolidated corporate tax provisions under IFRS
  • Proactive and a self-starter
  • Desire to work hard but have fun doing it
  • Able to self-manage competing priorities and work load peak cycles while maintaining a healthy work life balance
  • Previous experience with the SIFT and Mutual Fund Trust rules is an asset
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of Yardi, Newstar, and Onestream is an asset
  • GST/HST experience is an asset
