JOB SUMMARY

The Wastewater Treatment Branch manages the operation and maintenance of the major City wastewater treatment facility and various communal treatment systems, provides technical expertise for wastewater treatment process technologies, and is responsible to protect public health by ensuring all environmental compliances and preventive and corrective maintenance are performed as required. The Wastewater Collection Branch is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s Wastewater Collection infrastructure and systems including communal wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater system, and oversees the Sewer Use Program.

You are responsible for monitoring, adjusting and controlling the overall process and 24 hour operation of assigned areas in a multi-component sewage treatment facility, in an efficient and economical manner, to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and municipal laws, regulations, guidelines and/or standards, and prevent personal or City liability.

You are also responsible for coordinating a response to all on-site process and equipment alarm conditions and other emergencies; providing technical and operational assistance; preparing reports, records, and maintaining data; and other duties as assigned.

You may be assigned to one of the three wastewater sub-systems (plant-liquid train, plant solid train or the wastewater collection system).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3 year community college diploma in Engineering Technology, preferably with emphasis in environmental, waste water, or biochemical technology

Minimum of 5 years of experience in process control and operation

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Wastewater Treatment/Collection Operator Certificates at the appropriate level, within the timeframe determined by the employer

KNOWLEDGE

  • Wastewater Collection or Treatment technology
  • Computerized supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA)
  • Spreadsheet programs for data analysis
  • Wastewater sampling and basic testing techniques
  • City policies and procedures
  • Environmental Services Department mandate and programs
  • Legislation/regulations applicable to wastewater treatment and collection
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
