Job Duties

Organize and assign staff to perform mechanical maintenance work through the University's computerized work order system.

Inspect the work of all assigned staff and directs corrective measures to secure satisfactory performance by the employees.

Inspect, investigate and solve problems related to the operation of both the mechanical systems and equipment, providing technical advice as necessary.

Perform skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level.

Receives requests for, provides estimate of work if required and determines the priority of repairs to mechanical system on campus.

Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies, materials, tools and equipment necessary to ensure tie efficient operation of the Mechanical Trades Department by initiating purchase requisitions or by use of the University credit card.

Using the computerized work order system, charges out labour and material cost for work performed by the mechanical trades department.

Make necessary reports and keeps records and files as required of work orders, requisition, upgraded and changes to systems etc.

Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstance for the protection of workers in his charge.

Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, with other health and safety related legislation and standards, and with such workplace practices as outlined by his immediate supervisor.

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Several years of directly related journeyman experience in a Maintenance position.

Must possess a valid journeyman license of certification of qualification.

Must possess a valid gasfitter 2 certificate or greater.

Preferred to have current Ozone Depletion Prevention Certificate (ODP)

Must possess a valid driver's licence.

Knowledge of recognized practices and techniques and the use of tools, equipment and

instruments common to the Mechanical Trades.

Ability to install, overhaul and adjust systems from sketches, blueprints of specifications: ability

to prepare sketches and/or diagrams for blueprints.

Must have a thorough knowledge of the theory and operation of pneumatic and electrical controls as well as a working knowledge of the theory, principles and operation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning system, refrigeration, plumbing and steam fitting.

Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Background in computerized systems which includes controls and preventative maintenance.

Ability to do heavy physical labour on occasion and to work on ladders, scaffolds, lift devices and in crawl spaces etc.

Ability to work with others.

Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and other health and safety related legislation and standards.
