Job Summary
The Assistant Flagging Supervisor is responsible for managing the weekly schedule for the flagging group and coordinating schedules and duties between internal and external parties. The position provides daily support to the Flagging Supervisor by assisting in all flagging protection activities over the assigned territory, in accordance with sound engineering practices, railway standards, procedures and rules
Main Responsibilities
· Help plan schedule for the following week
· Call employees to inform them of schedule changes or overtime
· Check time entry and expense accounts in Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP)
· Help the Supervisor manage occupational injuries and accidents
· Manage absences and replacements
· Conduct necessary investigations for various situations, particularly for disciplinary issues and document them in the systems
· Attend weekly management meetings with the Supervisors and Foremen
· Manage the vehicle fleet (e.g., change in allocations and plan for mechanical maintenance) and allocation of phones and computers
· Keep inventory and distribution of material updated
· Coach flagmen on protection, inspection of compliance with guidelines, and provide targeted support
· Keep employee files and worksite information files updated
· Support the supervisor in managing unforeseen events, employees to be reassigned, and any related administrative tasks
· Build weekly safety calls to discuss safety, injuries, new process and rules with the team
· Build quarterly in person safety days to discuss safety, injuries, new process, and rules with the team
· Handle on-the-job training for employees and contractors
· Replace the Supervisor, as needed, at worksite and project meetings
· Respond daily to emails that come into the Flag inbox
Working Conditions
The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments with various weather conditions with shift work. The role is required to be on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent is required to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires regular travel (50%) within the territory.
Requirements
Experience
Railway Operation
· Between 2 to 4 years of experience in railway operation
· Valid Drivers Licence
o Minimum 2 years of flagging experience*
o Experience supervising a unionized workforce*
o Labor Relations (LR) experience (i.e., interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline)*
*Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation
· High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
