What You Will Do

Reporting to the Manager - Maintenance Engineering, you will be responsible for the planning and coordination of design and construction activities of third party contractors such as Metrolinx. You will also be responsible for overseeing construction projects, programs, and contracts from inception through planning, design, scheduling, supply, quality assurance, installation and commissioning, and ensuring compliance with the capital budgets and schedules. The incumbent provides engineering support, guidance and oversight to the third party contractors', and controls the day to day engineering activities related to design, planning, construction and quality assurance of subway and surface track.

This involves:

  • Direct and coordinate all design and construction related activities;
  • Diagnose complex engineering problems and provide detailed engineering solutions;
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise the work carried out by the team;
  • Manage the budget/financial controls;
  • Liaising with other departments and stakeholders to ensure that work meets their requirements;
  • Promoting and maintaining professional working relationships between team members and other internal and external contacts.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • You are in good standing and registered as a professional Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario
  • Your application will demonstrate thorough knowledge engineering principles, standards, methods and practices
  • Your application will also demonstrate understanding of transit operations, materials and components as related to subway/surface track
  • Your application will also demonstrate knowledge of design and maintenance practices of subway and surface track.
  • Your application will also demonstrate understanding of project planning / management concepts and practices combined with a good working knowledge of current scheduling and expenditure systems
  • Your educational background in Civil or Structural Engineering is integral and will contribute to the success in this role.
  • Your knowledge, involvement and familiarity with AREMA, APTA, FRA, ASTM, CSA, and Occupational Health and Safety Act, environmental legislations, Municipal Consent Requirements, One Call Act etc.is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and work with multi-disciplined teams, deal with complex issues and maintain effective working relationships
  • Sound judgement strong management, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, report writing, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated and highly developed analytical problem solving and technical design skills
  • Ability to prepare and interpret complex reports, recognize problems, and evaluate solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and work with multi-disciplined teams, deal with complex issues and maintain effective working relationships
  • Sound judgement, well developed time management, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to direct, supervise, motivate and evaluate professional staff
  • Proficiency in the use of a computer and associated Microsoft applications
