Reporting to the Manager - Environment, this position is responsible for performing various duties related to the protection of the environment. The incumbent monitors corporate compliance to applicable government legislation and regulations; develops, recommends, implements and maintains environmental standards, programs and procedures; participates in the development of environmental policies; investigates and evaluates existing/potential environmental hazards in the workplace and throughout the transit system; conducts and/or oversees sampling and testing activities; and interprets findings and makes recommendations to prevent, eliminate, control and reduce environmental hazards. This position also acts as a corporate technical resource and provides advice and direction regarding legislated requirements and environmental policies, programs and procedures; develops and conducts training programs; liaises with TTC departments, external agencies and material suppliers concerning environmental matters; and prepares various reports, documentation, analyses and recommendations related to the work.
You will provide technical and administrative support on issues relating to environmental impacts and aspects by developing, updating, implementing and maintaining corporate programs and procedures associated with Waste Management, Environmental Approvals and Registrations, Spills, Chemical Management, Subsurface Contamination, Wastewater Management and Vehicle Idling to support the Environmental Management System; monitoring current programs to determine they are working as planned or if new strategies or programs are needed; investigating environmental incidents and assess environmental hazards; and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence; leading high profile environmental compliance audits, presenting findings to Department Heads and Executives and getting their approval on associated recommendations; providing advice, guidance and direction to management, staff and workers on legislated requirements, environmental programs and associated issues and concerns and understanding environmental legislation and regulations and interpreting its impact on TTC operation.
You will keep abreast of industry practices and emerging trends to ensure that TTC maintains its position as a progressive and responsible organization; manage consultants and contractors in collecting and analyzing environmental data and providing findings/recommendations to executives, management and workers; act as a Project Manager for various environmental initiatives involving staff and consultants. This includes managing, coordinating and administrating special projects and assignments as required; liaise with TTC departments and external agencies such as Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA), City agencies, other transit agencies, developers, neighbouring businesses/residents regarding environmental issues and concerns; develop and deliver various environmental training modules for TTC departments.
