Hours: 37.5 per week
Salary: $35.33 - $44.16 per hour (To commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation policy)
Shifts: Weekdays, Monday - Friday
Status: Temporary Full Time (until December 2025)

Position Summary
The Specialist, Malignant Hyperthermia works as a team to support the diagnostic status of patients in the UHN Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) Program.

Duties

  • Performs clinical diagnostic muscle biopsy Caffeine-Halothane Contracture Testing (CHCT) to establish the diagnostic status of a patient's Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptibility (MHS) according to the North American CHCT protocol
  • Performs gas chromatography to ensure standardization of the halothane concentrations used in CHCT
  • Performs molecular genetic analysis of the RNA/DNA samples and biopsy results
  • Manages the RNA and genomic DNA depository.
  • Maintains specialized CHCT equipment and annual certification and safety requirements
  • Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contravention's of the Act, in a timely manner.
  • Research related to this position includes the preparation of research protocols, grants and REB's; participation as an investigator in collaborative research studies; preparation of data and authorship for scientific manuscripts for publication; preparation and authorship of abstracts and posters for presentation at scientific meetings

Qualifications

  • At Minimum, completion of a master's degree program in molecular biology or recognized equivalent
  • At minimum over 3 years up to and include 4 years practical and related experience and/or 1 year on the job training
