Reporting to the Sr. Director of Data Management and Analytics, the incumbent will be a key member of the IT team, focusing primarily on data management activities including but not limited to strategy, governance, policies, and practices definition.
This person strengthens and provides recommendations on how data is made available and shared consistently across the organization. In-depth knowledge on data collection, processing, cataloging, modeling, storing, and sharing is required.
The Manager, Data Governance is expected to collaborate with data engineers and analytics specialists, business domain stakeholders and solution developers throughout the organization to identify, design ,and develop the most efficient data and analytical solutions to deliver desired business outcomes.
Data Governance (70%)
• Develop and articulate a clear vision and strategy for data governance that aligns with the organization's overall objectives and business priorities.
• Oversee and manage all aspects of the Data Governance Platform (Alation) at Kinross, including metadata management, data lineage, data cataloging, and quality monitoring.
• Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success and impact of data governance initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement.
• Lead cross-functional collaboration with business units, IT teams, and senior leadership to ensure alignment, adoption, and support for data-driven initiatives.
• Establish and oversee data stewardship programs, clearly defining roles and responsibilities for data ownership across business units.
• Develop, document, and implement a scalable data governance operating model, including strategy, policies, best practices, and standards.
• Define and enforce data standards, best practices, and guidelines to ensure data quality, integrity, security, and regulatory compliance.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to business units, offering strategic insights and guidance on how to maximize the value of data while promoting data literacy and analytics adoption across the organization.
• Engage and support data owners to ensure they understand their governance responsibilities, providing expert advisory guidance and ensuring accountability.
• Monitor and assess emerging technologies, trends, and industry practices to continuously evolve the organization's data strategy and governance frameworks.
• Support audits and regulatory reporting by providing comprehensive governance documentation, compliance reports, and risk mitigation strategies.
• Develop and lead training and awareness programs to educate employees on data governance principles, policies, and best practices.
• Advocate for a data-driven culture, ensuring that governance frameworks enable data democratization while maintaining strong security and compliance controls.
Information & Data Architecture (10%)
• Assist with reviewing, documenting, and improving existing strategies, principles and standards related to enterprise-level data architecture.
• Define and implement data catalog capabilities and scalable metadata management to support a self-service Analytic Framework (consumers, explorers, innovators).
• Catalog existing data sources and document the flow and transformation of data from source through data repositories and to end-user data marts or applications.
• Work with data stewards to continuously improve data lineage, metadata management, and master data management strategies.
Business Intelligence, and Integration Practices (10%)
• Collaborate with Data Engineering, and Reporting and Analytics teams to implement report certification levels, data validation, cleansing, and monitoring processes.
• Assist with initial data exploration steps (binning, pivoting, summarizing, and finding correlations, for example) as well as data modelling activities.
• Collaborate with business leaders and stakeholders to understand their data needs, challenges, and opportunities for leveraging data to drive business outcomes.
Data Science (10%)
• Assist in introducing Data Science concepts within the organization and play a role in all stages of the data science project life cycle, including the identification of suitable data science project opportunities, partnering with business leaders, domain experts, and end-users to gain business understanding, data understanding, and requirements collection.
• Prepare the exploratory data analyses, proof-of-concept modeling, and business cases necessary to generate partner consensus and internal support for potential opportunities.
• A bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, information management, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• 5-8 years of experience in Data Governance and/or Data Management
• Previous experience with Cloud capabilities related to data storage and usage is required.
• Previous experience in the mining industry is an asset.
• Certifications in Data Governance, Data Management, or Compliance (e.g., DAMA CDMP, DCAM, CIPP) is considered an asset.
• Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Arabic is considered an asset.
• Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA), and regulatory requirements related to data privacy and security.
• Experience with Data Governance Platforms (e.g.: Alation, Collibra, Informatica)
• Knowledge of data access controls, encryption methods, and best practices for securing sensitive data assets.
• Familiarity with data auditing, monitoring, and governance tools to ensure data quality and compliance.
• Understanding of database systems, data warehousing concepts, and data modeling principles.
• Proficiency in SQL for data querying, manipulation, and retrieval.
• Knowledge of data integration techniques, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and data pipeline development.
• Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and services for data storage, processing, and analysis.
• Experience with cloud-based data warehouses, data lakes, and serverless computing environments for scalable data processing and analytics.
