About this opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional Medical Lab Technologist (MLT) to ensure clients receive quality care by providing technical and quality oversight to our lab processes and leadership with our point of care testing devices. All lab work at Holland Bloorview is processed off site. The MLT will be the key lead and contact with these community labs including Sunnybrook Health Sciences and Sick Kids Labs. The MLT will work in partnership with our clinical teams and community partners to ensure quality client and family centred care. This is a part time position, 1 days per week during normal working hours with an onsite requirement.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Reviews and interprets QC, and other lab related statistical data;
  • Drafts validation protocols, and standard operating procedures
  • Must be adept at monitoring and trouble-shooting quality issues for all POCT platforms
  • Validates new and serviced POCT devices; provides training to healthcare professionals; and aids in troubleshooting network and instrument issues

Interprofessional Collaboration:

  • Collaborates with interprofessional team members and community partners
  • Administers the external quality assessment programs to meet accreditation requirements
  • Maintains equipment and operator training records

Leadership:

  • Provides strength based leadership and is a resource person and role model for the interprofessional team
  • Participates in professional, program and hospital-wide initiatives
  • Actively promotes professional role through participation in external forums
  • Examines current processes, identifies opportunities for change and provides recommendations for improvements

Research and Education:

  • Uses evidence in practice, develops and uses clinical practice guidelines, pathways and protocols in service delivery
  • Participates in quality improvement and research activities as required
  • Functions as a content expert and resource person in their specialized field of practice, and takes advantage of informal and formal learning opportunities to educate the interprofessional team
  • Enhances personal and professional development through reflective practice and by attending educational opportunities and /or conferences

Qualifications

Education

  • Current CMLTO registration as a General Medical Laboratory Technologist required
  • Minimum two years recent Point of Care Testing experience in a hospital setting and/or successful completion of AACC POCT certificate required, with advanced experience in clinical chemistry required.

Experience

  • Experience working with pediatric population preferred

Skills

  • Demonstrated sound knowledge and understanding of all relevant analytical techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality control, proficiency testing, and related troubleshooting
  • Demonstrated ability to train health care providers
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to troubleshoot networking issues and instrument issues including instrument configuration
  • Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and change tasks midstream as required
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving, conflict resolution and decision making skills
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement and total quality management principles required
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written required
  • Demonstrated ability to write concise, complete and accurate standard operating procedures. Experience writing validation protocols preferred.
  • Experience with middleware or data management software such as AegisPOC required. Experience with urine dipstick readers, their set up and ongoing troubleshooting required.
  • Experience with configuration and validation of glucose meters required.
  • Strong computer skills utilizing Microsoft Word, EXCEL, PowerPoint applications
  • Demonstrated continuous learning and reviewing lab scientific/professional related literature
  • Knowledge of IQMH POCT requirements and MOH POCT policy
