A great opportunity within the Safety and Environment Department.
The Safety Inspector carries out safety work in the field and provides 24/7 safety support to line management. Work is primarily centred around incident response, inspection, safety outreach and knowledge transfer activities.
You will participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and respond to and investigate safety-related incidents (critical injuries, accidents, fatalities, work refusals, complaints, etc.) both in person and by telephone; conduct, lead and/or oversee root cause incident investigations. Conduct interviews, take notes, photographs and measurements, prepare diagrams, and complete written reports in the field. Conduct field verification of corrective actions from root cause incident investigations; monitor and support the Incident Commander as a Safety Officer at major incident scenes. Evaluate the performance and execution of emergency response activities, participate in debriefings and prepare summary reports; issue reports and/or notices of non-conformance, inspection rating sheets, safe work permits and similar reports relevant to the work performed; attend workplace and customer locations on all shifts and take immediate action on unsafe conditions and any non-compliance with safety rules, procedures, guidelines and safe work. Respond to unresolved safety concerns/complaints; be a regular presence in the subway and surface transit network to monitor routine operations, identify opportunities for improvement and perform safety promotion activities directly with workers, customers and the public.
You will identify unsafe conditions and behaviours and be responsible for ensuring appropriate action is taken immediately and long-term; support emergency response to incidents, exercises, closures etc; perform facility safety inspections. Attend and monitor special events to verify safety performance; prepare investigation and inspections reports. Deliver presentations to management, JHSCs, and front-line staff; act as third-party resource for JHSCs by monitoring meeting minutes, resolving disputes, making presentations at JHSC meetings and workshops, and assisting with recommendations; represent the TTC during interactions with the Ministry of Labour, Training & Skills Development (MLTSD), Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Technical Standards and Safety Authority, and City of Toronto. Participate on municipal/provincial/national public safety boards, initiatives, and projects and deliver special job briefings and perform other knowledge transfer activities.
