Career Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Vehicle Maintenance Engineering, the successful incumbent will be responsible for providing engineering design services to ensure acceptable standards of performance, reliability and maintainability of the TTC's rail vehicles fleet.
This is an exciting role where you will provide original design and specification work for Rail Cars and Shops vehicle systems and components through projects and offering design solutions.

What You Will Do

  • Providing engineering design expertise, producing detailed designs, written specifications, estimates and schedules for various rail vehicle projects.
  • Review design submissions by technical staff (i.e. drawings, specifications) for technical accuracy, adequacy, manufacturing feasibility, cost effectiveness, etc.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the departmental budget and providing budgetary estimates for various projects
  • Scheduling, prioritizing and assigning projects and outlining scope of work for technical staff.
  • Assisting the vehicle manufacturer and equipment suppliers in the design and configuration of both new and existing vehicles.
  • Designing and constructing various electronic PC boards, PLC controlled systems, and component prototypes.
  • Reviewing final design submissions for technical accuracy, adequacy, manufacturing feasibility, cost effectiveness, etc. and coordinating the construction of prototypes for the preparation of Special Work Instruction Sheets.
  • Identifying system and component reliability problems, monitoring and analyzing reliability data, and formulating cost-effective design or prevention programs to improve vehicle reliability.
  • Supervising and coordinating the efforts of TTC staff from various sections in order to conduct instrumentation and testing of vehicles and analyzing and interpretation of test data.
  • Participating in interdepartmental standardization of products, methods, and materials through co-operation with supervisors and technical staff of other departments.
  • Analyzing design requirements and making recommendations for and assisting in the procurement of external technical design resources as required by the Subway/Vehicle Engineering section.
  • Ensure the end product provided by Consultant/Contractor staff meets departmental needs and standards.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

What Qualifications Do You Bring

  • Completion of a university degree in a related discipline or combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • OACETT certification as an Engineering Technologist (or equivalent) is required.
  • CADD and software proficiency (e.g. Excel, Database, Power Point) is a must.
  • Good knowledge of engineering design principles, methods and practices.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of and be able to diagnose and correct failures in electrical, electronic, automotive, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and components utilized in transit rail vehicles and related equipment.
  • Possess sound judgement plus well developed technical, analytical, problem solving, costing, interpersonal, verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Must be knowledgeable of project management concepts and practices and vehicle testing procedures/programs.
  • Ability to motivate and work in a team environment and co-ordinate efforts of others to accomplish objectives.
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering technology in the areas of dimensioning and tolerancing, pneumatics, metallurgy, materials selection, non-destructive testing and failure analysis.
  • Ability to plan, co-ordinate and direct activities of technical staff assisting in design, testing and implementation work
  • Able to provide direction to consultants and contractors engaged in associated activities.
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
