The Technical Security Specialist position is a cross site role and is technical in nature. The main responsibility of this role is to manage, administer, and configure the security systems at Unity Health Toronto as directed by the Manager, IT Security. Some of these systems include the Firewalls, e-Mail scanning systems, remote access technologies and VPNs, EDR, SIEM, IDS, Patch Management and others.

In addition to the primary security administration responsibilities, this role requires that the Security Specialist have some level of expertise or knowledge in risk management, threat management, disaster recovery, and security assessments for the organization. This expertise could be in the form of providing their expert opinion, or hands-on implementation on the various systems to ensure that the work required by the project is completed on time. The role is required to participate in reviewing emerging security technologies, security controls testing and conducting vulnerability assessments and penetration testing as required and providing their technical recommendations, based on their experience and knowledge.

The role also involves troubleshooting security related issues such as malware, viruses, Trojans, intrusion incidents etc. The incumbent will be responsible for patching servers with security updates/patches and other patches, as dictated and conducting and reviewing security scans to identify root cause of problems.

This is a cross site position which will require 7x24 support of all mission critical systems.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • An undergraduate degree or diploma in computer science, or business administration is required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the IT Security field is required
  • Experience with NGFW is required.
  • Ability to monitor firewall logs, intrusion prevention logs, and network traffic for unusual or suspicious behavior
  • Security certifications such as SSCP or Security+ are required
  • Experience with anti-spam/malware, vulnerability and patch management tools is required
  • Ability to monitor current trends of malware and intrusions and recommend enhancements to current security systems
  • Hands-on experience with Penetration testing frameworks (ie, Metasploit) as well as oversee the remediation activities associated with vulnerability findings
  • Experience with VPNs (IP Sec and SSL), cryptography concepts, remote access and DNS/DHCP is required
  • Experience with RADIUS and wireless technologies is required
  • Understanding of security vulnerabilities and exploit lifecycle
  • Ability to recommend, schedule, and apply fixes and security patches to information security technologies and end-user computing devices as necessary
  • Ability to assist in the enforcement of policies, procedures, access controls and associated plans for information security based on industry best practice and managerial direction
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt to change
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, conceptual and decision-making skills and the ability to work within a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to handle situations involving unplanned outages. Well developed problem solving skills
