What You Will Do

  • Plan, schedule and produce detailed design, technical contract specifications and engineering drawings for section specific system projects.
  • Prepare complete detailed design layout drawings/schematics for TTC's Subway Workcar vehicle fleet and associated equipment
  • Coordinate, direct and guide relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems; resolve design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications.
  • Conduct comprehensive testing programs to ensure Subway/Workcar vehicles and components are operating at prescribed specification levels
  • Investigate, diagnose, and perform failure analyses of complex electrical engineering problems and troubleshooting to locate electrical malfunctions and faults; recommend alternate design, procedures, equipment, materials and related matters
  • Perform a variety of complex engineering calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications for section specific system projects.
  • Investigate, evaluate, test new, existing or proposed systems, components and/or construction methods; troubleshoot operating problems, malfunctions/faults; recommend alternate design, procedures, equipment, materials and related matters.
  • Compile cost and quantity estimates for specific projects, programs and budget purposes; assist with the preparation of budgets/cash flows and monitor where necessary to meet project and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Initiate relevant procurement process, review technical proposals and quotations from consultants for compliance with TTC requirements, evaluate tenders, recommend for award and monitor progress.
  • Provide design review expertise on submissions received at various stages of design and provide comments concerning compliance with TTC requirements.
  • Provide technical support and engineering guidance to relevant staff on a 24-hour basis as required.
  • Report significant safety, hazard, security, cost, reliability, warranty, quality and other engineering issues in a timely manner.
  • Perform feasibility studies and surveys and assess the condition and safety of existing structures, systems and/or equipment, determining the extent of repair; perform random audits at sites to determine quality assurance and conformance to design.
  • Demonstrates behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. What Qualifications Do You Have?

  • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (Electrical, Mechatronics or Computer Engineering) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or Engineers-in-Training will be considered. Job title and pay will be commensurate with experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and best practices of systems engineering methods and approaches
  • Experience providing interdisciplinary engineering counsel to support complex engineering projects
  • Sound knowledge of electrical engineering principles, methods and practices with specific knowledge in the areas of drafting, AC/DC motors and generators, microprocessors, and electronic controls
  • Expertise in the use of diagnostic instrumentation, sensors, transducers, dataloggers, chart recorders and data analysis
  • Basic understanding of mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to oversee interdisciplinary engineering projects with the depth required of a traditional engineering discipline
  • Good knowledge of the rules and regulations associated with vehicle engineering
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, CSA, NFPA, and applicable codes/practices/standards is an asset.
  • Must have the ability to quickly become familiar with the TTC subwayworkcar vehicle fleet and associated electrical and electronic equipment, as well as the various functions carried out by the Rail Cars and Shops department
  • Sound judgement supported by well-developed technical, analytical, problem-solving and technical writing skillsUnderstanding of and experience in Risk Management practices
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers and computer . applications related to the work (i.e., MS Office, MS Word, Excel, etc.) with strong knowledge of CADD systems and operations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
