We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Sheet Metal Foreperson (Design Development) to join our Commercial Construction division, based in our Toronto office.

The Sheet Metal Foreperson (Design Development) will be responsible for supporting the Design Management Team in developing a functional, compliant, and cost-effective design within project timelines. This role will work closely with project managers, engineers, VDC teams, and site teams to ensure constructability, efficiency, and compliance with design requirements, while maximizing installation efficiencies and minimizing costs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in sheet metal design and construction, ensuring alignment with project goals and constructability best practices.
  • Participate in estimating turnover and pre-construction meetings, ensuring early trade engagement in design development.
  • Review and provide feedback on design drawings, specifications, and consultant submissions for accuracy, completeness, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with project management and engineering teams to assess alternative design approaches and propose value-engineered solutions.
  • Lead and participate in design development meetings, supporting coordination between field execution teams and consultants.
  • Interface with Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) teams to ensure 3D models and shop drawings reflect design intent and are compliant with project agreements.
  • Identify clash detection and constructability challenges early in the design process and work with project teams to resolve issues.
  • Support scope development and pricing for Design Revision Requests (DRRs), assisting in cost control and change management processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant building codes, safety regulations, and project specifications.
  • Conduct page-turn reviews of design documents with project execution teams to ensure alignment with field requirements.
  • Assist in developing accurate material take-offs and procurement schedules to support project timelines.
  • Monitor design progression against the construction schedule, ensuring all required information is delivered on time.
  • Participate in client and construction meetings, contributing expertise to design-related discussions.
  • Maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams, leveraging partnerships to support project objectives.
  • Work closely with electrical, architectural, and structural teams to ensure coordination of sheet metal design elements.
  • Review and coordinate access door requirements, firestop & smokestop considerations, and duct cleaning specifications.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Journeyperson in Sheet Metal Work or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in sheet metal construction, with a focus on design coordination and pre-construction involvement.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork fabrication, installation best practices, and fire-rated assemblies.
  • Experience in design-assist or design-build projects is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, architectural, and structural drawings, including the ability to interpret and review consultant designs.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Revit (or other BIM software).
  • Strong understanding of building codes, safety regulations, and risk management principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to assess constructability challenges early in the design process.
  • Ability to work autonomously while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communicator and team player, able to work with engineers, project managers, and site teams.
