Job title: Carbon Accounting and Reporting Manager
Job Summary:
The Paper Excellence Group is a privately held manufacturer of pulp, paper, packaging, tissue and wood products, with a workforce of more than 21,300 in some 60 locations across the Americas and Europe.
Reporting to Paper Excellence's VP Climate Strategy, the Carbon Accounting and Reporting Manager will be responsible for managing comprehensive carbon emission inventories for all companies within the Paper Excellence Group, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, and supporting climate reporting. This role will also involve setting science-based targets for emission reductions aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), as well as supporting a carbon transition plan. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, carbon accounting & reporting, emission reduction strategies, climate scenario analysis, risk management, and carbon markets.
Main Function
· Develop and manage detailed carbon emissions inventories for all companies within the group, covering Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions), and Scope 3 (indirect emissions from the upstream/downstream value chain) emissions.
· Establish science-based targets for emission reductions in alignment with SBTi.
· Develop and implement strategies and action plans to achieve these targets.
· Monitor progress towards emission reduction goals and adjust strategies as needed.
· Develop metrics and KPIs to track progress in emissions reductions and support the Group and business units' voluntary reporting commitments, such as CDP.
· Ensure compliance with relevant carbon reporting frameworks and regulatory requirements, including Europe's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
· Help conduct climate scenario assessments and develop climate risk assessment tools to help identify climate- and carbon-related risks and opportunities.
· Help develop a carbon transition plan for the Group.
· Participate in the Group's sustainability and carbon committees.
· Contribute to product life cycle assessments and help develop plans to further decrease product carbon footprints.
· Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including sustainability, operations, and supply chain teams, to drive emissions reduction initiatives.
· Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for team members and others (as needed).
Responsibilities
· Developing and maintaining a robust data collection and reporting system to ensure accurate and consistent emissions tracking.
· Target setting, monitoring and reporting.
· Coordinating climate- and carbon-related risk assessments.
· Climate scenario analysis.
· Collaborating with various departments and external partners to gather necessary data and ensure comprehensive coverage of all emission sources.
· Preparing and presenting regular reports on emissions inventory and reduction initiatives to senior leadership.
· Engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, industry groups, and regulatory bodies, to promote best practices and stay updated on industry trends.
· Lead the climate reporting demands from key stakeholders (CDP, CSRD, TCFD, GRI, SASB, etc), working with all the BUs.
· Benchmarking best practices related to carbon reduction emissions.
· Search for opportunities to present Paper Excellence Group business case.
· Search for opportunities to apply for grants and incentives related to carbon emissions reduction projects.
Critical Competencies
· Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field. An advanced degree is preferred.
· Proven experience in carbon inventory management, greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, and reporting.
· Experience with setting and managing Science-Based Targets (SBTi) or similar sustainability initiatives.
· In-depth knowledge of GHG Protocol standards and methodologies.
· Proficiency in using carbon accounting software and tools.
· Familiarity with life cycle assessments (LCA) and environmental impact assessments.
· Strong analytical and quantitative skills to accurately calculate and interpret carbon emissions data.
· Ability to analyze complex data sets and derive actionable insights.
· Understanding of relevant regulations, standards, and best practices in carbon management and sustainability reporting.
· Strong project management skills to oversee the implementation of carbon inventory processes and SBTi goals.
· Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience in a multinational corporation or a similar large-scale organization
· Proficiency in data analysis and carbon accounting software.
· Certification in GHG accounting, such as the Certified Carbon Reduction Manager (CRM) or similar credentials.
· Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks such as CDP, GRI, or TCFD.
· Knowledge of renewable energy projects and energy efficiency measures.
