Who we are looking for

The Environmental Assessment Analyst leads internal reviews of development applications and participates in resource planning processes with a team of other EA Analysts and colleagues in and outside the department. The EA Analyst identifies potential adverse effects of proposed projects, ensures consideration of departmental interests in decision-making processes, evaluates mitigation measures, and provides recommendations as required. The incumbent may also conduct site visits and represent the department on various committees and working groups related to environmental and resource management.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in Environmental Sciences/Management, Environmental Assessment, Biology, Ecology or a related discipline;
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating project proposals, including researching and evaluating technical data and drafting recommendations to support the environmental assessment process;
  • Demonstrated experience applying environmental assessment theories, practices and principles toward reviews of land, resource and industrial development proposals;
  • Experience working collaboratively with partners and stakeholders (including First Nation governments, industry, consultants, and/or NGOs in an environmental assessment context; and,
  • Knowledge of consultation and engagement requirements acquired through professional experience.

Assets you may bring to the position, or development opportunities in this role include:

  • Experience project managing reviews of resource development projects including general knowledge of land and resource management in the context of territorial legislation and policy, and alongside First Nation governments; and
  • Experience with spatial mapping software such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online to analyze information or create maps.

  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills, the ability to convey technical information and recommendations clearly, concisely and in a manner that a non-technical audience can understand;
  • Well-honed interpersonal skills, the ability to build effective relationships and collaborate with others;
  • Effective time management skills, the ability to prioritize a changing workload and meet prescribed deadlines;
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to manage significant amounts of data and information;
  • Knowledge of environmental issues, including climate change, cumulative effects assessment, and an understanding of current EA best practices.

Job Requirements: Occasional travel within the Yukon to remote locations in a variety of weather and field conditions. Occasional travel outside the territory.
