This is a full-time term position working 75 hours biweekly until January 7, 2026. Temporary Assignments may be considered.

The Agriculture Branch supports the growth and resilience of Yukon's agriculture sector through various programs, including the Agriculture Lands Program, Livestock Health Program, and the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership funding program. Additionally, it provides sector outreach, education, and research to promote the production, processing, and marketing of food, fodder, and fibre grown in the Yukon, contributing to the territory's food self-sufficiency and community well-being.

The Livestock Health Technician is a key member of the Agriculture Branch team, responsible for conducting and administering meat inspection services at licensed abattoirs in the Yukon, delivering technical livestock health services, and contributing to the implementation of the Animal Protection and Control Act and other related programs. This includes supporting the Livestock Health and Veterinary Service programs, funding, compliance, enforcement and livestock sector development. This position works closely with a small, collaborative team within the Agricultural Branch and partners with the Animal Health Unit, as well as engaging with diverse stakeholders including industry clients, First Nations, and the public to promote the sector's success and sustainability.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in agriculture, animal science or a related field
  • Experience in the field of animal health and/or food processing
  • Experience working with livestock
  • Experience working in an abattoir, butcher shop or meat processing facility will be considered an asset
  • Experience working with legislation, regulations and policies related to the Meat Inspection and Abattoir Regulations and Food Safety Practices will be considered an asset
  • Experience in compliance and enforcement activities will be considered an asset

Candidates who have a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Job Requirements

  • Willingness to travel within Yukon
  • Willingness to work irregular hours based on operations requirements
  • Mandatory use of all prescribed personal protective equipment, safety materials and equipment
  • Physically able to perform work that includes standing for extended periods of time, ability to lift weights of up to 25kg, prolonged contact with animal fluids and tissues, exposure to strong or unpleasant odors, and working in bent or awkward positions, sometimes in confined spa
